Jayden Danns suffered a fresh hamstring injury scare just 29 minutes into his long‑awaited return for Liverpool U21s against Manchester City on Monday night.
Danns had been out for more than five months out with a serious hamstring problem picked up back in September with the U21s. But the 20‑year‑old striker was back in the starting XI at the Joie Stadium, handed his first competitive minutes since undergoing surgery and enduring a long rehabilitation period at Kirkby.
It was hoped this would be the first step towards full sharpness and a late‑season push to remind Arne Slot and his coaches of his first‑team potential.
Around the 29‑minute mark he suddenly pulled up off the ball, immediately reaching for the back of his leg and signalling to the bench that there was a problem.
It was exactly the scenario Liverpool’s medical staff had been desperate to avoid after months of careful loading. After brief treatment on the pitch, the decision was made that he could not continue and he was substituted, heading straight down the tunnel with the physios.
Now Liverpool u21 manager Rob Page has provided a somewhat positive injury update on the situation, suggesting that it may well just be a precaution to take him off and that he could have continued in the first half:
“We’ll know more in 24 hours, but it was probably precautionary as well,” Page said to Redmen TV.
“He’s felt something, to what extent, we don’t know, but I think he’s done the sensible and right thing to do. He could have played on for the first half, but I think the sensible thing to do for his development now and for his future is for him to come off.”
All told, Liverpool will simply have to wait and see what the next 24 hours bring. The early signs and Rob Page’s comments suggest there is at least some room for optimism that this was more precautionary than anything else, but until the medical team have completed their assessment there will naturally be a degree of uncertainty around Danns’ immediate prospects.
