Bruno Fernandes remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2027 and Manchester United club chiefs have made a final decision over the Portuguese playmaker’s contract
Manchester United have categorically ruled out selling captain Bruno Fernandes this summer. The Portuguese captain has just a year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and has regularly been linked with an exit.
Fernandes has admirers in Saudi Arabia, with the Red Devils previously willing to cash in on his services. He was eventually convinced to stay at the club and it appears that an exit is not on the cards this time around.
According to The Sun, club chiefs have told Fernandes that they do not want him to depart under any circumstances. They have told the 31-year-old that they want him to be the centre of a successful United side and believe that a place in the Champions League would go a long way in convincing him to stay.
Fernandes’ current deal has a €65million (£56.5m) release clause written into it that can be activated by an overseas club. His contract runs until 2027, albeit there is an option of a further campaign.
United chiefs have moved after being caught off-guard by the midfielder’s interview in December, where he admitted that he was ‘hurt’ by the club’s stance over a sale.

He said: “I could have left like many people do and said: ‘I want to leave, I don’t want to train, I just want to leave for €20m or €30m, so they pay me more on the other side.’ But I never did that. I never felt in a position to do that, because I felt that the empathy and affection I had for the club were the same.
“But there comes a point where, for them, money is more important than anything. The club wanted me to go, I have that in my head. I told the directors this, but I think they didn’t have the courage to make that decision.
“I decided to stay, also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely like the club. The conversation with the manager also made me stay. But, from the club’s side, I felt a bit like, ‘if you leave, it’s not so bad for us.’ It hurts me a lot.
“More than hurting, it makes me sad because I’m a player they have nothing to criticise about. I’m always available, I always play, good or bad. I give my all. Then you see things around you, players who don’t value the club as much and don’t defend the club as much… that makes you sad.”
Fernandes has since underlined his happiness at life in Manchester, amid what has been a sensational season. The former Sporting Lisbon star has been a crucial player under Michael Carrick with eight goals and 19 assists in all competitions this term.
