BBC viewers have described the drama starring Colin Farrell and Viggo Mortensen as ’emotional’ and ‘thrilling’
The BBC has added an “amazing” movie about a real life rescue mission.
Thirteen Lives, which was made in 2022 and stars Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton, can currently be viewed on the iPlayer.
It tells the true story of how 12 boys on a football team, and their coach, ended up trapped deep inside a cave underneath a mountain in Thailand’s Chiang Rai province in 2018.
The group of boys – aged 11 to 16 – had set off to explore the Tham Luang cave, but ended up marooned on a small rocky shelf inside after there were floods that blocked their exit.
The boys had water but no food, but managed to survive for 18 days inside the cave. Meanwhile, search teams including local volunteers, police and the Thai Navy Seals worked to free them as the world watched.
In the end, all of the boys and their coach made it out alive. However, a former Thai Navy Seal died during the mission.
Thirteen Lives impressed viewers after it was released four years ago, with one posting on Rotten Tomatoes: “This is a must see. There’s no fluff, it’s as true as it gets, and even though I kept up with the news of this constantly when it happened, it’s still a good thing to be able to practically witness what happened by watching this recreation.”
“Well done to everyone involved,” they added.
“What an absolute emotional and thrilling masterpiece,” said someone else. “I especially like that there was no dubbing for the Thai characters – it was just so much more authentic this way. 100% recommend!”
“Great movie!” declared another viewer. “So realistic, well-acted, and brilliantly directed by Ron Howard. It felt like a documentary. The ending was so intense for me. I was a nervous wreck.”
“I’ve never been so stressed out watching a movie before in my life,” one viewer posted on X, as others said it was an “incredible” story.
Another said on the platform, which was formerly Twitter: “Thousands of volunteers from all over the world working on a single course. The beauty of humanity.”
Thirteen Lives can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
