The Nintendo Switch 2 version of FFXIV is coming in August.

Final Fantasy XIV players will soon be able to play the online MMO on the go with a Nintendo Switch 2 version planned to launch in August 2026.

Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu came on stage at Final Fantasy Fan Fest 2026 in Anaheim to make the announcement. “Thank you for your patience,” he said.

“It’s been a long time coming. We’re happy to announce that you’ll soon be able to play FFXIV Online on Nintendo Switch 2.”

Kiryu and game director Naoki ‘Yoshi P’ Yoshida brought a Nintendo Switch 2 out on stage to demonstrate the game being played in handheld mode.

While it’s not currently possible to ascertain what resolution and frame rate FFXIV is running at on the portable hardware, it did at least look very playable.

The concept of being able to play FFXIV on the go will likely be very exciting for a lot of fans looking for a more convenient way to complete their dailies, but there is a pretty major catch – and it has to do with the MMO’s subscription service.

Currently, a single FFXIV Online subscription gets you access to the game on whichever platform you’ve purchased the base game on. That means if you own FFXIV on PC and PlayStation 5, only one subscription is needed to play on each platform.

However, you’ll need a separate subscription if you want to play on Nintendo Switch 2. This appears to be a compromise on Nintendo’s side, but as a small bonus, Nintendo Switch Online won’t be required.

There’s also a 50% discount benefit for those who already have an active FFXIV subscription on another platform.

“The best part about the Switch version is playing on the go. We hope this gives players more freedom to play the way they want to,” said Yoshi P.

FFXIV will launch on Switch 2 in August with a one month early access period planned beforehand. That early access period will be free to play with no subscription required.
