Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck is a player that many top clubs have been reportedly monitoring as we approach the summer transfer window.
It has been reported here at DaveOCKOP that Liverpool made contact with Nico Schlotterbeck’s camp as far back as October.
The German international has been stalling over signing a contract extension at Borussia Dortmund amidst reported interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Out of contract in 2027, this summer would be the perfect opportunity for Borussia Dortmund to cash in on the centre-back and they had been weighing up that option as Schlotterbeck continued to stall.
The new deal being offered to the defender puts Nico Schlotterbeck on a better salary and also includes a clause that carves out a clear exit path for the club to sanction a sale when they feel the time is right.
Borussia Dortmund know that their financial and sporting ability relies on their ability to master the art of selling players.
Letting Schlotterbeck leave for free, or for a decreased fee this summer, would not sit well with the hierarchy at the club and a new update from Florian Plettenberg proves that an agreement that suits all parties is on the cusp of being reached.
Via a post on X, Plettenberg said: “Borussia Dortmund have agreed everything with Nico Schlotterbeck’s management: contract until 2031, top earner status, and a release clause from 2027.”
“All that’s missing now is Schlotterbeck’s final approval. Liverpool and Real Madrid are not in the race.”
Borussia Dortmund have seemingly diverted Liverpool and Real Madrid’s attention away from Nico Schlotterbeck and are on the verge of tying him down to a new deal.
The release clause will be active from 2027, reinforcing the notion that he won’t leave on a free but the club will now be able to negotiate a substantial transfer fee if clubs go back in for the player in the future.
