Jeremie Frimpong picked up an injury concern with the Netherlands in their 1-1 draw with Ecuador over the international break.

The right‑back only lasted 13 mins in a 1-1 friendly draw with Ecuador in Eindhoven, in a game already shaped by Denzel Dumfries’ early red card.

Koeman later confirmed that the substitution was injury-related and admitted it was a “blow” amid wider fitness frustrations in his squad.

For Liverpool, it is another unwelcome addition to Arne Slot’s defensive headache ahead of a massive FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City, with Frimpong already having endured a disrupted first season at Anfield through various knocks.

However, it appears as though it was an injury scare and nothing less. Frimpong appeared to train with the main squad in the first session back from the international break – with the club posting images on social media today:

Frimpong has battled with injuries ever since signing for Liverpool. His problems began on the opening day away to Bournemouth in August, when he was forced off around the hour mark with a hamstring issue that ruled him out of the next two games, including the trip to Newcastle and the home clash with Arsenal.

After returning in early October, disaster struck again on 22 October in the 5-1 Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt, pulling up just 19 minutes in and missing a block of around 12 matches through late October, November and into early December.

He fought back to fitness, only for a third hamstring setback to arrive almost immediately, this time early in the new year during the Champions League tie against Qarabag at Anfield, where he lasted barely a couple of minutes and then sat out another five games across league and cup.

For a player who’d missed just seven club games through injury before signing, it’s a cruel turnaround.
