Spring is now well and truly here, and while temperatures remain somewhat on the cool side, the milder air means gardens have shaken off their winter slumber and are beginning to thrive for the new season. This time of year is always a hectic one for gardeners as plants kick off their active growing season, with trees bursting into new leaves, flowers coming into bloom, and lawns starting to grow more rapidly as the weather gradually warms up.
As grass shoots up more quickly in spring, gardeners need to stay on top of tidying, fertilising and weeding to ensure a healthy lawn. Keeping grass looking lusciously green and healthy demands regular upkeep, including weekly or fortnightly mows between now and October.
Fertilising your grass regularly can also boost its appearance, as it delivers essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which help to strengthen roots and improve resistance to weeds and moss.
But rather than splashing out on pricey garden fertilisers that often contain harsh chemicals, you can get your grass looking gloriously green with one natural ingredient you’ve probably already got lurking in your kitchen: coffee grounds.
According to experts, scattering coffee grounds on your lawn can help stimulate healthier and greener grass, as they are packed with nitrogen, which is vital for healthy plant growth.
They also contain other key nutrients such as potassium and phosphorus, which can enhance the overall condition of your lawn.
Furthermore, if you’re battling weeds spreading across your lawn, coffee grounds could prove invaluable as they contain natural compounds that can inhibit the growth of certain plants, resulting in weed suppression.
The grounds also form a thin layer across your lawn, which acts as a physical barrier, helping to block out sunlight to further hamper weed growth, while also deterring garden pests such as snails and slugs, reports the Express.
In its online guidance on the advantages of coffee grounds, Gardening Know How explained: “It isn’t the caffeine that stimulates healthy grass growth, but rather the nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals that coffee grounds contain.
“These nutrients are released slowly, which is a big benefit over quick-release synthetic fertilisers.
“The nutrients in coffee grounds are slowly broken down, allowing the turf to have a longer period of time to absorb them, ensuring stronger turf for longer.”
Coffee grounds must be completely dry before being applied to lawns, so if you’re using spent grounds, you’ll need to leave them to dry out beforehand.
Once dried, scatter the grounds evenly across your grass to prevent clumping, then lightly rake them into the soil to aid integration.
