It was looking like a mere formality, but it has now been confirmed. Fifth place in the Premier League will secure Champions League qualification. Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Sporting CP at the Estadio Jose Alvalade last night secured a top-two finish in the UEFA season coefficient rankings, which means that a fifth Champions League qualifying spot for the Premier League has been confirmed.

With 7 games left in the season, Liverpool FC are somehow in fifth with 49 points, just one point above Chelsea in sixth. For a team that started the season with aspirations of contending for the domestic and continental titles, the mere fact that Liverpool is worried about making Europe’s top competition pretty much says everything about how the season has gone. Not making the Champions League would be a catastrophe, and the ripple effects would surely prompt changes across multiple departments of the club.
