Luis Diaz says he has no regrets about leaving Liverpool and believes joining Bayern Munich last summer was the right decision.
The winger moved to Bayern for £66m and has impressed, contributing 23 goals and 18 assists. He opened the scoring in Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Real Madrid on Tuesday and is on course to add a Bundesliga title, with Vincent Kompany’s side nine points clear at the top.
The 29-year-old and Harry Kane were on target for Bayern, while Kylian Mbappe’s late goal kept the tie alive ahead of the second leg.
During his time at Liverpool, Diaz scored 41 goals in 148 appearances and won the Premier League, FA Cup and two Carabao Cups.
He featured 36 times in their 2024/25 title-winning campaign, and his departure has been cited as a factor in the club’s struggles this season.
Liverpool have missed Diaz’s output in wide areas this season, with Arne Slot reluctant to hand significant minutes to wingers Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa. Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo’s numbers have also declined compared to the last campaign.
The decision to sell Diaz has been heavily debated in recent months, with Diaz pushing for a move after it became clear Liverpool were unwilling to meet his contract demands.
“Making the decision to come to Bayern was the right one. I feel very happy and I enjoy every match,” Diaz told ESPN. “I feel very good, strong, and that allows me to be available to help the team.”
Diaz’s excellent form has even drawn praise from Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who admitted he would like to see the Colombian return to Anfield.
A reunion could be on the cards later this month if Bayern Munich and Liverpool both progress from their Champions League quarter-finals, with the sides set to meet in the semi-finals should they eliminate Real Madrid and PSG.
On Bayern’s performance in Madrid, Diaz added: “We’re very happy, but we’re left with the feeling that we could have scored one or two more goals. We played a great match against a very difficult opponent.
“We recovered the ball, moved it quickly, and threaded the pass through. We had already studied Real Madrid, and the play played out as we had planned. We felt more comfortable, we recovered the ball more, and we controlled the game better. That’s what we like to do.”
