Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior has provided an injury update ahead of his side’s clash with Everton on Saturday at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with the Blues set to miss some key players.
Everton’s push for European football took a hit after a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal last weekend, though David Moyes’ side performed admirably and were only beaten in the final two minutes.
Dwight McNeil came close, hitting the post after getting past David Raya. The Toffees currently sit eighth, five points behind Chelsea.
A win would be crucial for both sides. Chelsea’s recent loss to Newcastle has dented their top-four hopes, leaving them sixth, just one point behind Liverpool in fifth and three points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa. With little margin for error, Rosenior’s team must finish the season strongly to secure a Champions League spot.
Chelsea were also knocked out of the Champions League this week after a home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, during which Trevoh Chalobah suffered an injury.
The defender, who was stretchered off against the Ligue 1 side with what appeared to be a severe ankle injury, is expected to be sidelined for weeks rather than months.
“It wasn’t until later after the game that I saw the image,” said Rosenior. “Then everyone saw it and you’re really worried. It’s never good to hear that Trevoh is out for any period of time but fortunately it’s nowhere near as serious as first feared.
“It’s not a serious injury but we’re looking at a period of six weeks, which is disappointing. But where we were a couple of days ago, we’re in a better place than what we thought.”
Rosenior also provided updates on goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen and Chelsea captain Reece James. Jørgensen missed the previous two matches due to a groin issue, while James was sidelined midweek after sustaining a hamstring injury against Newcastle United last weekend.
“Unfortunately, Filip had his scan and needed a minor operation,” said Rosenior. “Nothing too serious again, it’s a matter of weeks. With Reece, we’re going to look more after the international break. It’s not serious, but there is something in his hamstring [scan] and it’s something we’ll monitor after the international break.”
