Ibrahima Konate has confirmed that he is close to a contract agreement with Liverpool FC.
The 26-year-old’s future at Liverpool has been one of the most talked-about sagas of the season, with the French defender’s contract ticking down and speculation swirling around his long-term commitment to the club.
However, the mood around Anfield appears to be shifting. Having seen the Trent Alexander-Arnold situation play out last summer, Liverpool supporters have been desperate for positive news on Konate – and it seems the defender has provided exactly that.
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo, he confirmed that he is close to an agreement with the club:
“To be fair, there are many things people have said, but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are 1776685112 close to an agreement,” Konate explained. “I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way.”
“For sure there is a big chance I’m here next season. This is what I always wanted. I’m waiting to sort the contract but when everything is sorted you will have to ask (sporting director) Richard Hughes what I said to him in September, November and he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet.”
He also explained why the contract talks have been so drawn out:
“Yes [it’s taken a long time] but this is a negotiation. With Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah last season it was exactly the same, I think they signed the contract in April and this is maybe how the club want it.”
The Frenchman also claimed that the wider public does not know the full details of his contract extension, and what “sacrifices” he’s made for the Anfield club:
“It was a tough year because many things happened and I think if everyone knew exactly what happened to me, they could understand many things, which kind of sacrifices I’ve done for this club.”
“Right now I am focused on the end of the season and making sure we are qualified for the Champions League next season and after we take the time to talk about this season because it’s going to be a big part of my story.”
There have previously been suggestions that Konate could sign a deal until either 2030 or 2031. Konate has been a constant presence at the heart of Liverpool’s defence next to captain Virgil van Dijk this season, racking up 45 appearances in all competitions and finding the net twice.
