Nottingham Forest’s dramatic Europa League shootout win over FC Midtjylland has given England’s UEFA coefficient another timely boost – and could have also offered Liverpool a close-up look at one of their long-term targets. Forest overturned a first-leg deficit in Herning, winning 2-1 on the night to level the tie at 2-2 on aggregate before cruising to a 3-0 victory on penalties as the Danish side missed all three of their spot-kicks.
The result sends the Midlands club into a rare European quarter-final and adds precious coefficient points to the Premier League’s already dominant standing.
According to Danish outlet Campo, the second leg at MCH Arena was watched by a host of heavyweight clubs from across Europe. Liverpool were among those in the stands, joined by Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Monchengladbach, Monaco and Ipswich Town, all with scouts present to run the rule over Midtjylland’s talent pool on a big continental stage.
While no specific names were confirmed as targets, the report notes that both Liverpool and Dortmund have repeatedly scouted the Danes this season.
One obvious candidate to have been under the microscope again is Chilean winger Dario Osorio, who has been heavily linked with Anfield in recent months.
Liverpool reportedly saw an offer worth around €9–10 million rejected by Midtjylland, with the Superliga club holding out for a significantly higher fee for a player they view as one of the league’s potential record sales. Osorio, a right-sided attacker capable of operating on either flank, has built a reputation as one of the most exciting prospects in Denmark thanks to his direct dribbling, eye for goal and creativity in the final third.
Campo add that Liverpool’s interest has been longstanding, while Bournemouth and several Bundesliga sides have also monitored the 22-year-old ahead of a likely summer move.
