Visiting a popular tourist location would no doubt be busy so it’s understandable for people looking to avoid large crowds. It can feel overwhelming when you’re in an overcrowded place, while all the queues for food or drink might be long.
Now there’s one gorgeous village hidden within hills which boasts the most stunning views you’ll ever see. And the great thing is, the place doesn’t get too busy so you can enjoy some time away from the crowds. So where is this place? Monreal in Germany is known for its half-timbered houses, narrow cobblestone streets and romantic riverside setting. Some might say this village feels like a scene from a fairytale.

What to do in Monreal:
You can visit the ruins of Löwenburg, known as the Castle of Lions, or Philippsburg, which both offer panoramic views of the town.
Traumpfad trials can be a fun hike if you’re really into your walking. The Monrealer Ritterschlag trial runs through the town and surrounding forests.
Meanwhile the Half-Timbered Village, Fachwerkdorf, is gorgeous as you can walk through the historic village centre filled with traditional houses, many of which have plaques detailing their history.
Next you can visit the Nepomuk Bridge which is over the Elzbach stream. After all your sightseeing, you can relax at the local cafes, for example Cafe Plüsch is known for its coffee and pastries.
Also there’s small pottery in the old school where you can explore the many signs detailing the village’s history as a centre for the textile industry.

Generally the village is considered a charming, tranquil and historic destination rather than an overcrowded tourist spot.
The best time to visit is during late spring or early summer (May to June). Alternatively, early autumn (like September) can be another good option as it’s pleasant hiking weather with manageable crowds.
If you’re looking for warm, sunny weather, late June to August is ideal. And finally, Monreal is a great location for historic Christmas charm so visiting in winter is also recommended.

The closest major airport for Monreal are Frankfurt or Cologne/Bonn. Flights from London to Frankfurt can vary in price, although you can snap up some seriously good deals via Ryanair or easyJet.
