The divisive series follows Gypsy Rose Blanchard after her release from prison
A ‘disturbing’ true crime show that sparked debate among viewers is streaming for free.
Channel 4 has just added Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up Season 2 to its library of reality shows. The American docuseries follows Gypsy Rose Blanchard as she experiences life as a free woman, following her release from prison.
In 2016, Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her role in the murder of her mother Clauddine, pleading guilty to second-degree murder. She served eight years and was released on parole in 2023.
Her newfound freedom came with unexpected fame, as chilling details about her childhood came to light. The now 34-year-old quickly became the subject of a string of documentaries, including Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up.
According to a synopsis, the series dives into her post-prison life as she reconnects with family and finally lives with now ex-husband Ryan Anderson.
Its first season dropped in 2024, followed by another instalment last year. While true crime fans were completely hooked on both seasons, the show has also been slammed for “glorifying” Blanchard’s crime.
Taking to IMDb, one impressed viewer said: “Well done, very insightful reality show production. It really captured the pathology of the situation. The content though is a titillating, salacious and sad story.”
Someone else raved: “Watching Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up for the 10th time. (It’s my guilty pleasure.) All I want to say is Gypsy Rose, you’re amazing and I hope you are having a great night.”
Meanwhile, a disappointed viewer said: “Commit a crime = get screen time! What is the world coming to? I’d rather watch a show about ANYONE else.”
And a Rotten Tomatoes user shared: “It risks glorifying or sensationalizing the murderer, turning them into a celebrity. This can send the dangerous message that extreme violence leads to fame or attention.
“Publicizing a murderer in entertainment form can re-open wounds for the victims’ loved ones. It’s deeply disrespectful and can cause ongoing emotional harm.”
Someone else agreed, describing the series as “disturbing”.
Those keen to form their own opinions can stream both seasons of Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up now on Channel 4.
