A fed-up homeowner has tried everything from signs and notes to stop the mess, but Reddit users think one simple step could finally solve the problem

Animals using your garden as their own personal toilet can be a right nuisance, and one homeowner is at their wits’ end. The frustrated resident, who goes under @Momshie-mo on Reddit, shared their problem on the social media platform, and fellow users suggested one step that could finally bring an end to the mess.
According to the post, the problem had only started recently. It lead the homeowner to suspect either a new neighbour had moved in or that someone nearby had recently got a dog.
They explained they had already put up a sign asking owners not to let their pets foul the lawn, and even left one of the deposits in a bag alongside a note requesting it be disposed of properly. However, the incidents continued.
Posting on the forum, they wrote: “Anyone who has tips how to get their (unknown) neighbour who let their dog poo in your front yard and not pick it up?” The homeowner revealed they were even considering installing a new camera in an effort to identify the culprit and gather evidence.
Many fellow Reddit users agreed, suggesting CCTV or a doorbell camera were likely the most effective way to catch the dog owner in the act. One commenter said how they had experienced something similar before, and only discovered who was responsible after installing a camera.
Another advised: “Best bet is get a camera and catch them in the act.” The homeowner appeared receptive to the suggestions, replying that they may install a camera, or perhaps a dummy camera, accompanied by a warning sign stating offenders would be reported to the authorities.
The issue is one that councils across the UK continue to grapple with. The Government says local authorities can issue fixed penalty notices of up to £100 for dog fouling offences, while those prosecuted through the courts can face much larger fines.
Meanwhile, dog owners have a legal responsibility to clear up after their pets in public places. Failure to do so can result in enforcement action from local councils.
While some Reddit users suggested humorous forms of revenge, the overwhelming consensus was that gathering evidence first would give the homeowner the best chance of putting an end to the unwanted deposits once and for all.
