Niall Worsfold, 29, of Leeds, wept at the hearing as police confirmed he had been charged with the murder of his one-month-old baby son

A man has appeared in court charged with murdering his one-month-old baby son.

Niall Worsfold, 29, of Leeds, was tearful as he appeared at the hearing charged with the murder of his child.

Police said the baby, whose name has not been released, died on July 10 2020 six days after being admitted to hospital from an address in Lincombe Drive, Gledhow.

West Yorkshire Police said Worsfold has also been charged with one count of child cruelty. He made his first appearance before a crown court judge in Leeds on Monday.

At the preliminary hearing a trial was scheduled to start on February 22 next year with court hearing expected to last up to four weeks.

The defendant, who appeared via video link from prison and appeared tearful throughout the hearing, was not asked to enter pleas to the charges.

The 29-year-old was remanded in custody until his next appearance, plea and trial preparation hearing at Leeds Crown Court on September 7.

Judge Howard Crowson told him: “The prosecution will make sure all evidence is available to your lawyers by August 24.

“I think you already know what’s alleged against you in pretty clear terms.”

Police said a 25-year-old woman, who was arrested as part of the investigation, has been released with no further action.
