The warning relates to a little-known requirement around windscreen wipers which motorists only think about when they stop working &#8211; and experts say it could land drivers in serious trouble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The rule comes under <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/1986\/1078\/regulation\/34\" rel=\"nofollow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Regulation 34 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986<\/a> which states that all vehicles must be kept in roadworthy condition with properly functioning equipment. According to <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/windscreen-wipers-and-washers-on-road-vehicles\/summary-of-the-requirements-for-windscreen-wipers-and-washers-on-road-vehicles?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">official government guidance<\/a>, windscreen wipers and washers must be &#8220;maintained in efficient working order&#8221; at all times when a vehicle is used on the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">RAC warn that if a fault is serious enough &#8211; such as driving in heavy rain with a failed wiper motor &#8211; it could be treated as driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition. According to <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rac.co.uk\/drive\/advice\/legal\/driving-penalties\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">RAC <\/a>data, roads see hundreds of thousands of breakdown-related incidents each year, many of which are linked to avoidable maintenance issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/the-highway-code\/driving-in-adverse-weather-conditions-226-to-237\" rel=\"nofollow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Highway Code Rule 229<\/a> further reinforces a driver&#8217;s need to &#8220;see clearly&#8221; before setting off in poor <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/weather\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">weather<\/a>. Drivers are advised to regularly check wiper blades for wear, ensure washer fluid is topped up and replace faulty components immediately.
