They signalled for help and three prison officers ran towards Watkins\u2019 cell, where he was bleeding from his injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Prosecutors said the attack lasted just 20 seconds and Gedel was \u201cperky\u201d when he was detained by prison officers afterwards, allegedly saying \u201cHave a good night\u2019s sleep Watkins lad\u201d, when he was taken past the cell where Watkins was receiving medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He later told police that he was jealous of \u201cnonce prisoners\u201d because they \u201cgot treated like royalty,\u201d and that he thought it was disgusting having to share a wing with sex offenders at HMP Wakefield, where they were not segregated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Gedel, 25, who was initially referred to by police as Rashid Gedel, and Dodsworth, 44, both deny murder and possession of a makeshift knife in prison. Prosecutors say the attack was \u201ca joint offence\u201d between the two defendants, and Dodsworth knew it was going to happen.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"image-group\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"SlideViewerButton_slide-viewer-button__BDJoG\" aria-label=\"Open image viewer\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-controls=\"image-lightbox\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-embed__0T8WX false\" data-testid=\"imageembed-37129439\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"37129439\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"image\">\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-container__2AIQm\">\n<figure class=\"Figure_figure__Uce4f\" style=\"--figure-aspect-ratio:1.5\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Watkins\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1_Ian-Watkins-death.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"ImageCaption_caption__j7HRu\" data-testid=\"image-caption\">\n<p aria-label=\"Watkins was serving a 29-year sentence\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Watkins was serving a 29-year sentence<cite aria-label=\"Image: South Wales Police\/PA Wire\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-credit__wlx1W\" data-testid=\"caption-credit\">(Image: South Wales Police\/PA Wire)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<p><\/button><\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Opening the case to jurors on Thursday, Tom Storey KC said Watkins, who was a \u201cparticularly notorious and high-profile\u201d prisoner, received two notes the day before he was killed which accused him of getting another prisoner kicked off the wing, demanded money from him and threatened violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Storey said that although it was unclear whether these notes lay behind the attack, prisons are places where \u201cgrudges are borne, and acted upon\u2026 and where \u2018grassing\u2019 or \u2018snitching\u2019 on others is viewed in a poor light\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The court heard Gedel had been moved into the same wing as Watkins and Dodsworth the day before the attack, and \u201ccoincidentally\u201d put in the cell next to Watkins. On the morning of Watkins\u2019 death, prison officers started unlocking the cells on B wing after 9am, and Gedel left his cell, but Watkins chose to remain inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The court heard Gedel and Dodsworth met in another prisoner\u2019s cell, and that Dodsworth entered the cell with a \u201cdressing gown or towel wrapped up in a bundle\u201d before leaving without it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After talking to Dodsworth and another inmate, Gedel briefly went back into his own cell and then stood leaning against the railings, while Dodsworth \u201cloitered\u201d near the top of the stairs and appeared to be acting as a \u201clookout\u201d, jurors heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Storey said: \u201cAt this time Gedel was, in all likelihood, waiting for a moment when the prison officers on the landing were out of sight, and when he would have an opportunity to carry out the planned attack on Mr Watkins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">CCTV showed Gedel going into Watkins\u2019 cell just before 9.20am and leaving just 20 seconds later, before walking towards Dodsworth and passing him something. Dodsworth glanced at the item and put it in the pocket of his jogging bottoms, jurors heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Storey said a prison officer asked who had done this after Watkins was found, and Watkins \u201csaid something to the effect of \u2018that little black fella\u2019\u201d. Watkins, from Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, collapsed onto his bed and lost consciousness. Paramedics were unable to resuscitate him and he was declared dead just before 10.15am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Storey said that as prison officers ran to take hold of Gedel, he \u201cjust stood there, holding his arms outstretched and offering no resistance to them whatsoever\u201d. As he was being taken back to his cell, he passed Watkins\u2019 open door and said: \u201cHave a good night\u2019s sleep, Watkins lad,\u201d jurors heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Storey said staff who were told to observe Gedel through the hatch in his cell door commented on \u201chis perky demeanour\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cHe discussed with one of them the offence that had led to him being imprisoned at HMP Wakefield in the first place, and he said something to the effect of \u2018If I\u2019m going to do life for murder, I\u2019m going to make sure it\u2019s worth it\u2019,\u201d the prosecutor said. \u201cHe also told the same officer, \u2018If I\u2019ve killed him, you could be talking to someone famous\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Before all prisoners were locked in their cells, Dodsworth was seen going into an alcove with some bins, the court heard.
