O\u2019Connor, 36, was sentenced to 18 years for manslaughter and a five-year extended licence period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The jury at Southwark Crown Court were told Kol\u2019s \u201ccatastrophic\u201d injuries were of the force \u201cseen in a serious road traffic accident or a fall from a height onto a hard object\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After meeting O\u2019Connor, on the dating app in the autumn of 2021, Coutts, from Kent, was accused alongside her boyfriend of inflicting \u201ccatastrophic\u201d harm to her child and concocting a \u201ctissue of lies\u201d to avoid responsibility &#8211; even blaming the toddler for his own injuries due to his \u201cclumsiness\u201d.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"image-group\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"SlideViewerButton_slide-viewer-button__BDJoG\" aria-label=\"Open image viewer\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-controls=\"image-lightbox\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-embed__0T8WX false\" data-testid=\"imageembed-37133111\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"37133111\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"image\">\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-container__2AIQm\">\n<figure class=\"Figure_figure__Uce4f\" style=\"--figure-aspect-ratio:1.5\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Scott O'Connor mugshot\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778322917_67_0_Scott-OConnor-court-case.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"ImageCaption_caption__j7HRu\" data-testid=\"image-caption\">\n<p aria-label=\"Killer Scott O'Connor\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Killer Scott O&#8217;Connor<cite aria-label=\"Image: PA\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-credit__wlx1W\" data-testid=\"caption-credit\">(Image: PA)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<p><\/button><\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Footage released by police showed her wailing to officers as paramedics arrived: \u201cIt&#8217;s not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The toddler was found by the London Ambulance Service on April 25, 2022 not breathing and with bruises on his face, as well as a serious injury to his abdomen caused by a stamp or punch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He lived for two years before passing away from his injuries aged just four years and three months on June 29, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Judge, The Honourable Mr Justice Johnson, said Coutts, who wept as she was being sentenced, \u201cdid not directly inflict the violence\u201d, but told her she \u2018failed to take steps to protect him (Kol) from your partner despite the obvious signs of what was happening\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Sentencing Coutts, she was told: \u201cYou must have known that the injuries were inflicted by Scott O\u2019Connor. Instead of protecting Kol from O\u2019Connor, you continued to live with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cInstead of taking Kol to receive the medical attention that he so obviously needed, you went to watch a football match with Scott O&#8217;Connor.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The judge told the pair: \u201cEach of you continues to deny responsibility, each blames the other. Neither of you has shown any remorse.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"image-group\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"SlideViewerButton_slide-viewer-button__BDJoG\" aria-label=\"Open image viewer\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-controls=\"image-lightbox\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-embed__0T8WX false\" data-testid=\"imageembed-37133114\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"37133114\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"image\">\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-container__2AIQm\">\n<figure class=\"Figure_figure__Uce4f\" style=\"--figure-aspect-ratio:1.5\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kol Page\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778322917_479_0_Scott-OConnor-court-case.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"ImageCaption_caption__j7HRu\" data-testid=\"image-caption\">\n<p aria-label=\"Kol Page suffered serious injuries\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Kol Page suffered serious injuries<cite aria-label=\"Image: PA\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-credit__wlx1W\" data-testid=\"caption-credit\">(Image: PA)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<p><\/button><\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Kol suffered bruising of an escalating severity and was photographed with two black eyes on April 9, 2022, with medical experts telling jurors during the trial that the bruising was likely from two punches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Prosecutor Ed Vickers KC said the couple went to a football match rather than seek medical assistance for the bruised toddler.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">During the trial, jurors were shown text messages between the couple, including an exchange on the morning of April 20, 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In the exchange, Coutts messaged O\u2019Connor to say Kol had been \u201cwhinging\u201d, and O\u2019Connor replied saying: \u201cJesus slap him back to sleep lol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Emergency services were called on April 25, 2022, and Kol was taken to hospital where he had surgery and three injuries to the small bowel were seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Prosecutors said the injuries were caused by significant force to the abdomen, as the result of a punch, kick or stamp. Kol suffered internal bleeding as a result of his injuries leading to cardiac arrest which resulted in severe brain damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">His injuries were so severe that doctors could not give him enough medication to take away his pain without risking causing his death and he died just over two years later after being cared for by foster parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a victim impact statement, Kol\u2019s foster parents described how he was so badly injured they initially moved into the hospital to look after him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">His foster mother said he was \u201cin so much pain\u201d and that she \u201cstayed up night after night caring for him\u201d. She told the court: \u201cI immediately fell in love with him. I knew he needed someone to be there for him, to protect him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cHe was in so much pain. He would cry out in pain so much. You could hear him from the lifts as you walked into the hospital. I knew it was him as he had such a distinctive cry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt was so hard to comfort him, I wanted to cuddle him but it would cause him too much pain. But it was nice as the staff would say thank goodness you are here, as when he could hear my voice it would placate him. This meant that I knew he loved me in the same way I loved him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI see him as my child &#8211; I may not have given birth to him, but I see him as my son. I am blessed to have been able to have looked after Kol for the time I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Charles Langley KC, defending Coutts, said it was O\u2019Connor \u201cwho caused all the injuries to Kol\u201d. Michael Turner KC, for O&#8217;Connor, said he had a \u201cmomentary loss of control\u201d and there was no intention to kill Kol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Jurors cleared the couple of murder but convicted Coutts of causing or allowing the death of a child, and O\u2019Connor, her boyfriend at the time, of manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The judge said O\u2019Connor had carried out a &#8216;deliberate intentional assault&#8217; on an \u201cinnocent and defenceless two-year-old boy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He was told: \u201cYou struck a two-year-old child with sufficient force to tear internal tissues and cause catastrophic bleeding. You have shown no remorse, no insight and no acceptance of responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While being led away after being jailed, O\u2019Connor shouted: \u201cFor something I didn&#8217;t f****** do mate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Det Chief Insp Kate Blackburn, who led the investigation, said: \u201cKol was an innocent little boy who suffered horrific abuse in the place where he should have been safest \u2013 at home with his mother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cCoutts and her boyfriend, O\u2019Connor, tried to deceive paramedics, doctors and police officers, repeating lie after lie about how Kol came to be so seriously injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cKol was boisterous, cheeky and endlessly loving to everyone who knew him. He should have had a bright future, but was instead let down by those who should have protected him most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Richard Murrison, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: \u201cKol was a little boy who deserved to be safe, loved, and protected. That he was so catastrophically failed by the very people who should have cared for him most is something that will stay with everyone who has been involved in this case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cScott O&#8217;Connor subjected Kol to a campaign of abuse so severe that it ultimately cost him his life. His own mother, Zoe Coutts, did nothing to protect him, stop the abuse, or report what was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">An NSPCC spokesperson said it was a \u201cheartbreaking case\u201d and \u201cKol was subjected to sustained violence that caused catastrophic injuries and ultimately led to his death\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They said: \u201cBabies and young children are particularly vulnerable to abuse because they are completely reliant on the adults around them for care and protection. Also, there may be no regular involvement with professionals if parents or carers choose to care for their children at home and keep others away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe all have a part to play in keeping children safe, and sometimes that means asking difficult questions and thinking the unthinkable.
