He was also handed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order. <\/a>The National Crime Agency (NCA) was first tipped off to Slate&#8217;s crimes in March 2025; he was tracked down and arrested the very next day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Slate pleaded not guilty to three other charges, including participating in organised crime and facilitating sexual exploitation. Prosecutor Corinne Bramwell stated it was not in the &#8220;public interest&#8221; to pursue these, and they will now lie on file. Slate had been remanded in custody since February following threats made against him due to the sickening nature of the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The court heard that Slate admitted to being a &#8220;global moderator&#8221; for Olympus, a Dark Web site set up &#8220;exclusively&#8221; to share child sex abuse material. From July 2023 until June 2024, Slate acted as a &#8220;re-up doctor&#8221; on another site called Neverland, where he reuploaded files. Living on the edge of North London\u2019s Alexandra Palace, Slate admitted running these terrifying operations from his own flat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In total, Slate pleaded guilty to distributing more than 2,000 indecent images &#8211; some of which were Category A, the most serious kind. Of the 87,000 images he amassed, more than 15,200 were in the highest category of abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The NCA revealed that Slate even financed and co-created a new image-hosting tool to help users upload abuse material. He claimed he was blackmailed into doing so but provided zero evidence to support the claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The defendant accepted a further charge of possessing 55 prohibited images of children on March 15 2025. Before he was remanded into custody he was subject to strict bail conditions, including a ban on deleting his browsing history, using software to access the dark web, and any unsupervised contact with children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The dark web is a part of the internet that people can only get to using particular software, most commonly TOR, and it is highly encrypted, providing anonymity to users that the world wide web &#8211; what people use on a daily basis &#8211; does not. Normal browsers and search engines cannot access the dark web and it is not illegal to go onto it &#8211; and there are some legitimate purposes to it. However, unfortunately its a hot bed for illegal activity, because of the anonymous nature of this corner of the internet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Jake Moore, former head of digital forensics and a cybercrime officer at Dorset police, now the global cybersecurity advisor at ESET, explains to the Mirror, &#8220;The dark web remains highly unregulated and extremely difficult to police. However, when law enforcement collaborates with tech companies and other international organisations, it can attempt to find the all important evidence that will help prosecute those at the top of these dark enterprises.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Investigations like the one against Slate, which was conducted by the National Crime Agency (NCA), are no mean feat, the expert claims. &#8220;Infiltrating these networks can be challenging and so police usually have to target specific people and spend many hours tracing their every move. Once enough evidence is located that will likely put them away, only then will a case go to trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Dark web forensics and cryptocurrency tracing with international cooperation have all become powerful tools in tracking down offenders who believe anonymity makes them untouchable. It is still rare but as technology catches up, those who believe they are above the law are slowly starting to panic. <!-- -->&#8220;Encryption, for example, has been a way criminals have hidden from the law but as quantum computing improves, those locked containers are slowly being unlocked by the police leading to more arrests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Robert Lay, NCA Senior Investigating Officer, said about the sentencing: &#8220;Slate&#8217;s depravity led him to become an active member of multiple pro-paedophile forums across the dark web.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;He encouraged others to view, share and discuss vile crimes against children with no regard for the victims involved. He benefitted not just through his own sexual gratification but through earning kudos from other members of these sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;The NCA is dedicated to bringing the perpetrators of child sexual abuse to justice and we will use the full force of our capabilities to uncover those operating in the shadows of the dark web.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) and the NSPCC have both welcomed the sentencing, noting that Slate not only amassed images but enabled a global network of offenders to view devastating material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Head of the Internet Watch Foundation Hotline,<strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"> <\/strong>Ngaire Alexander tells the Mirror, &#8220;Child sexual abuse material is shared all over the internet, on the dark and open web, and dedicated dark web child sexual abuse websites can show some of the most disturbing imagery, often featuring very young children or the most severe type of abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Last year, we saw an increase in the number of dark web webpages containing criminal content, but it was still a small proportion of the overall pages that the IWF finds elsewhere on the clear web.<u\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Most of these dark web sites are commercial, with offenders profiting from the sale and distribution of horrific images of rape and sexual abuse, sometimes even offering subscription services to access content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Analysts see first-hand how users of these dark web forums show no regard for the victims in the images they share. Their efforts to re-upload criminal images and videos so they remain online longer only deepens the harm and suffering that victims endure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It is a mistake to think that using the dark web means that users are immune from prosecution and we are pleased to see that Slate has been brought to justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) spokesperson said: &#8220;Slate arranged or facilitated the sexual exploitation of children while at the same time amassing and sharing thousands of images of young people being sexually abused. By running these dark web forums, he also enabled people across the world to view this devastating material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;When images are shared online by offenders like Slate it can be difficult for law enforcement to identify all the victims leaving them without the support they need to process what has happened to them and move forward in their lives. Child sexual abuse can cause profound and long-lasting harm so it is vital all those who are targeted and exploited get the help they need.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It is crucial that adults report any concerns they have about the safety of a child.
