of it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new Netflix documentary \u201cMarty, Life is Short\u201d covers the life and career of comedian and actor Martin Short, 76, including interviews with Short and his famous pals including Tom Hanks, Steve Martin and <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/05\/02\/entertainment\/catherine-ohara-to-appear-posthumously-in-martin-short-documentary\/\">the late Catherine O\u2019Hara<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The doc dives into his successful career and major personal tragedies including his wife Nancy Dolman\u2019s death from cancer in 2010.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2025\/03\/13\/celebrity-news\/meryl-streep-couldnt-help-but-fall-for-martin-short-inside-their-completely-unexpected-romance\/\">rumored romance with Meryl Streep<\/a>, it\u2019s filled with all the highs and lows Short experienced in his life.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the biggest revelations from \u201cMarty, Life is Short,\u201d which is now streaming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Short (pictured in \u201cMarty, Life is Short\u201d) said that his comedy doesn\u2019t come from a place of \u201cpain.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Short\u2019s life has been filled with loss \u2013 as the doc explains, the actor lost his older brother David when he was 12, his mother when he was 18, and his father when he was 20. <\/p>\n<p>He also lost his wife Nancy in 2010 from cancer, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/24\/celebrity-news\/martin-shorts-daughter-katherine-dead-by-apparent-suicide-at-42\/\">his daughter, Katherine to suicide<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all his hardships, Short says, \u201cIt\u2019s false\u201d to say that his comedy instincts came from a place of \u201cpain\u2026It\u2019s the opposite.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Growing up as the youngest of five siblings in a close Canadian family, he spent his childhood surrounded by \u201cso much attention and so much love,\u201d he says, to the point where he entered his teenage years \u201cwithout any kind of concern\u201d about the usual teen hang-ups, such as romantic rejection.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image had. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Short\u2019s longtime friend O\u2019Hara, who appears in the doc posthumously after her <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/01\/30\/celebrity-news\/schitts-creek-star-catherine-ohara-dead-at-71-report\/\">shocking death in January<\/a>,  praised his relationship with his wife Nancy. <\/p>\n<p>The \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek\u201d star reveals that she was going through a \u201crough patch\u201d in her marriage with <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/parents\/catherine-ohara-family\/\">her husband, Bo Welch<\/a>, who she was married to from 1992 until her death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went to therapy,\u201d she explains, adding when the therapist asked if she and Welch could name a couple whose relationship they would love to \u201cemulate,\u201d they immediately named Short and Nancy.<\/p>\n<p>According to the \u201cHome Alone\u201d actress, the therapist replied, \u2018I can\u2019t tell you how many people have named them, when I\u2019ve asked this question.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Short was married to Dolan from 1980 until her death from ovarian cancer at 58 in 2010.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Steve Martin (pictured with Short in \u201cMarty, Life is Short\u201d) is one of his famous friends in the doc.  <span class=\"credit\">Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the doc, Short recalls having a \u201cbreakdown\u201d in 1977 over his stagnant career right at the same time as his pal Bill Murray was taking off.<\/p>\n<p>He and Nancy were walking to a dinner for Murray, who had just landed \u201cSNL,\u201d when Short became \u201coverwhelmed with \u2018I can\u2019t do it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hadn\u2019t worked for a couple months, I had no prospects, and didn\u2019t know where I was going,\u201d Short recalls, adding he wasn\u2019t able to \u201cpretend to be happy\u201d for Murray.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after that, Short was inspired by a comedy group called War Babies, leading him to improv comedy.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Short (pictured with Katherine Short, Henry Short, Nancy Dolan, and Oliver <\/p>\n<p>Short says Nancy was endometriosis and had to take \u201cdrugs\u201d that made her moods \u201cheightened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actor told his wife, \u201cYou have to stop those drugs, and we\u2019re going to adopt a baby.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They eventually adopted Katherine, 42, Oliver, 40, and Henry, 36.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Short\u2019s stint on the popular sketch comedy show was\u2026 well, short.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hated it,\u201d Short, who was on the show for just one season in 1984, admits.<\/p>\n<p>He says working on the show was \u201cgrueling,\u201d and didn\u2019t like working alone in an office. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Short (pictured with his kids in an undated photo from \u201cMarty, Life is Short\u201d) said that loss is \u201csomething to negotiate.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Short <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/05\/01\/celebrity-news\/martin-short-details-family-tragedy-in-new-doc-weeks-after-daughters-suicide\/\">details the loss of multiple family members<\/a> at a young age, including his brother and both parents.<\/p>\n<p>Short, who was 12 when his brother died in a car accident, recalls that he was at camp, and a counselor told him,\u00a0 \u2018Your brother\u2019s been in an accident and it killed him.\u2019 That\u2019s how he put it. And I said, \u2018Is he OK?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After his passing, Short says he had a dream where David, told him \u201cI\u2019m fine, everything is wonderful, and I\u2019ll see you in a minute.\u201d When he woke up, he felt like \u201ca cloud had lifted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a simple fact that loss is something to negotiate. It\u2019s going to happen to all of us,\u201d he explains. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Short (pictured in an undated photo, shown in \u201cMarty, Life is Short\u201d) had a dream about his brother David where David said, \u201cI\u2019m fine, everything is wonderful,\u201d after his death.  <span class=\"credit\">Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Short\u2019s mother died of cancer in 1968 when he was 17 and his father died two years later, around 1970, from complications of a stroke.<\/p>\n<p>The doc doesn\u2019t cover his daughter Katherine\u2019s death by suicide at age 42 in February, which Short recently <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/05\/10\/celebrity-news\/martin-short-speaks-out-on-daughter-katherines-death\/\">called a \u201cnightmare.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she [could] until she couldn\u2019t,\u201d the \u201cFather of the Bride\u201d actor told \u201cCBS Sunday Morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Short (pictured with Dolman in \u201cMarty, Life is Short\u201d) lost his wife in 2010.  <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Short\u2019s wife, Nancy, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007, and according to pal Eugene Levy, \u201cAt a certain point we kind of knew that it wasn\u2019t going to work out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tom Hanks recalls Short\u2019s family\u2019s attitude during the devastating battle was, \u201cYou\u2019re not going to stop doing work because this malady is going to do its damage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Actress Andrea Martin says that Nancy \u201cwanted to keep going until she couldn\u2019t,\u201d and Short was \u201ca perfect partner because he let her.
