{"id":2081,"date":"2026-05-14T10:37:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T10:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/yellowstone-spinoff-dutton-ranch-is-a-winner-review\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T10:37:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T10:37:17","slug":"yellowstone-spinoff-dutton-ranch-is-a-winner-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/yellowstone-spinoff-dutton-ranch-is-a-winner-review\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Yellowstone&#8217; spinoff &#8216;Dutton Ranch&#8217; is a winner: review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/05\/dutton-ranch.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Back in the saddle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beth and Rip\u2019s hotly anticipated \u201cYellowstone\u201d spinoff show is here, \u201cDutton Ranch,\u201d and after some growing pains in its muddled series premiere, it\u2019s a winner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the most enticing show \u2013 it\u2019s a crime-soaked cowboy soap opera with clunky writing \u2013\u00a0 but that\u2019s what \u201cYellowstone\u201d was too, so it <em>is <\/em>a great sequel series.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) return (pictured in \u201cDutton Ranch) for the \u201cYellowstone\u201d spinoff show.  <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Kelly Reilly (pictured as Beth Dutton in \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d) reprises her role as tough talking Beth Dutton.  <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It delivers exactly what\u2019s advertised: more of brassy Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and her husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) supporting each other, issuing threats, and committing felonies, in between mundane chores on their ranch.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Executive produced by \u201cYellowstone\u201d mastermind Taylor Sheridan (but created by Chad Feehan, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/04\/24\/entertainment\/dutton-ranch-drama-yellowstone-spinoff-showrunner-quietly-let-go-3-weeks-before-premiere\/\">let go three weeks before premiere<\/a>), \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d follows Rip and Beth after the events of \u201cYellowstone,\u201d as they\u2019ve moved to a ranch in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Their troubled yet sweet adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), is along for the ride and finishing high school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They go about their daily lives operating their new ranch. And, they run into more interesting problems like possible arson, murder, and hostile new neighbors (led by a tough matriarch played by Annette Bening, and her volatile son, played by Jai Courtney).\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ed Harris (pictured with Reilly in \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d) is a new addition to the \u201cYellowstone\u201d world.  <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Annette Bening and Natalie Alyn Lind (pictured at the \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d premiere) both play new characters.  <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Carter also gets a sprinkling of a \u201cyoung love\u201d plot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ed Harris is another new heavy-hitter cast addition, playing the local vet with the perfect amount of gruff, world-weary charm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYellowstone\u201d (which drew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/yellowstone-season-5b-premiere-record-ratings-1236058819\/\">over 16 million <\/a>viewers) aired on Paramount from 2018 to 2024, following the Dutton family in Montana. There was patriarch<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/08\/entertainment\/kevin-costner-got-into-physical-fight-with-yellowstone-co-star-wes-bentley-that-caused-production-shutdown-report\/\"> John\u00a0(Kevin Costner)<\/a>, his sons Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Jamie (Wes Bentley), daughter Beth, and son-in-law, Rip.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Kevin Costner (pictured on \u201cYellowstone\u201d) still gets several mentions on \u201cDutton Ranch.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Kevin Lynch<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Luke Grimes\u2019 Kayce (pictured on \u201cYellowstone with Costner) also has his own spinoff show, \u201cMarshals.\u201d <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>John and Jamie didn\u2019t survive the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kayce is still alive, but he\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/23\/entertainment\/yellowstone-gives-boring-kayce-a-marshals-spinoff-review\/\"> busy on his own show<\/a> (CBS\u2019 \u201cMarshals\u201d). That\u2019s more of a procedural, so, although \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d is the second \u201cYellowstone\u201d spinoff, it\u2019s the main successor show with the same spirit and tone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDutton Ranch\u201d has plenty of \u201cYellowstone\u201d flavored scenes. After Beth informs Rip that they have a problem with one of the locals, he drily tells her, \u201cI\u2019m glad you\u2019re making friends, honey.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cDutton Ranch\u201d (pictured with Rip and Beth) is playing the \u201cgreatest hits\u201d from \u201cYellowstone.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cDutton Ranch\u201d (pictured with Reilly) is as subtle as a sledgehammer.  <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are fights in parking lots, and more than one dramatic fire. There are business meetings dripping with veiled threats, and sweeping shots of horse riding. Characters give speeches about land, legacy, and the life of a cowboy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s playing the greatest hits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Costner\u2019s shadow still looms large; John Dutton gets mentioned several times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The locals have elaborate names that sound like they\u2019re from pulpy \u201880s novels, like Beulah (Bening), Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Rob-Will (Courtney).\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cDutton Ranch\u201d (pictured with Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly and Luis Elkes during a screening on May 5 in London, England), has some clumsy writing but it\u2019s entertaining.  <span class=\"credit\">Darren Gerrish\/WireImage for Paramount+ UK<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hauser and Reilly (pictured in \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d) return as the fan favorite couple Rip and Beth. <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The series premiere feels like a patchwork cluster of disconnected \u201cYellowstone\u201d tinted scenes, rather than a coherent story. The second episode smooths it out, but \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d has a weirdly meandering start before it gets going.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also about as subtle as a sledgehammer. It has lines of dialogue like \u201cGod loves cowboys,\u201d and one of the villainous characters literally runs a slaughterhouse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The writing ranges from middling to clumsy (there\u2019s faux-profound dialogue about how the Texas sky stretches on forever. Ah yes, nobody\u2019s ever made that observation before!).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>16 million people watched \u201cYellowstone,\u201d they\u2019ll find a lot to like in \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d (pictured with Reilly and Hauser).  <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hauser and Reilly (pictured at a Berlin screening of \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d) deliver committed performances. <span class=\"credit\">Sebastian Gabsch\/Future Image\/INSTARimages<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But then again, most \u201cYellowstone\u201d viewers weren\u2019t tuning in for subtly and elevated writing, they were showing up to watch cowboys kick ass and take names.
