Mackenzie intentionally crashed the car. <\/a>She was charged with their murder and sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after fifteen years.\u00a0<\/p>\nDominic and Mackenzie began dating her freshman year of high school. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere was talk of getting married,\u201d Mackenzie\u2019s father, Steve Shirilla, explained in the doc. \u201cHe was someone my daughter was planning a life with.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mackenzie\u2019s parents let her move in with Dominic when she was 17 and he was 20, because they thought she was \u201cmature enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prosecutor Tim Troup explained that \u201cit was hard to comprehend that someone could just drive into a wall at that kind of speed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Troup and police investigated whether the car could have malfunctioned, and whether Mackenzie had drugs in her system.\u00a0<\/p>\nPolice investigated if Mackenzie (pictured) had drugs in her system at the time. Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nMackenzie and Dominic (pictured in an undated photo in \u201cThe Crash\u201d) allegedly had a \u201ctoxic\u201d relationship. Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nSurveillance videos of the speeding car \u201cdidn\u2019t add up,\u201d he explained, because the car turning looked \u201ctoo controlled,\u201d and it wasn\u2019t \u201csomeone driving with the music loud, throwing beer cans out of the car.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
When they found no hard drugs in her system, he concluded, \u201cThis was not some sort of party gone wrong. She wasn\u2019t high on psilocybin when she crashed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand how you have amnesia that lasts the exact right amount of time to not be able to help the police with their investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eventually, Troup and police found evidence that Mackenzie and Dominic had a \u201ctoxic\u201d relationship, which included text messages and accounts from friends, and accounts from Dominic\u2019s brother, Angelo.<\/p>\n
Angelo alleged that Dominic tried to break up with Mackenzie several times.\u00a0Dominic also allegedly told relatives that Mackenzie was \u201cbeing crazy\u201d during their relationship.<\/p>\nMackenzie (pictured with Dominic in an undated photo, shown in \u201cThe Crash\u201d) allegedly lost her memory of what happened. Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nTroup even found a text where Mackenzie allegedly threatened to crash the car with Dominic in it \u2014\u00a0just three weeks before the accident.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Faythe Walsh, Mackenzie\u2019s childhood friend, claimed that Dominic cheated early on in their relationship, which caused her to constantly ask him who he was with and what he was doing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The night before the crash, the couple had a sleepover with their friends \u2014 including Rosie Graham.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was not argument, there was not one moment of tension,\u201d Graham recalled in the doc. \u201cNot one bad vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nearly three years since being put behind bars, Mackenzie is now speaking out about the tragedy. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not a monster,\u201d she declared in the doc, appearing from prison.<\/p>\n
She described her relationship with Dominic as \u201crocky\u201d but \u201cyoung love,\u201d and maintained her claim that she doesn\u2019t remember the crash.\u00a0<\/p>\nDominic (pictured with Mackenzie in \u201cThe Crash\u201d) allegedly cheated on her when their relationship was new, one friend said. Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nPolice (pictured investigating the crash) investigated if it was an accident. Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u201cIt sounds crazy, but\u2026I have no recollection of that morning. I\u2019m not saying I\u2019m innocent. I was a driver of a tragedy. But, I\u2019m not a murderer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her parents believe her innocence, and allege that she suffered a medical event as she was driving due to POTS, which can cause brain fog and lightheadedness.\u00a0<\/p>\n
However, Dominic\u2019s sister, Christine Russo, pointed out that if someone faints while driving, their foot eases off the pedal. The car crash had \u201c100 percent acceleration\u201d the whole time, she said.<\/p>\n
Troup also said he wasn\u2019t provided with any medical statement to support the claim that she had POTS during the trial. <\/p>\n
Her dad Steve and mom Natalie believe she\u2019s innocent. \u201cWe have ironclad evidence that disputes what was said in the trial,\u201d he claimed. Natalie, for her part, added: \u201cShe never threatened to crash the car, [Dominic did].\u201d<\/p>\nSteve Shirilla (pictured in \u201cThe Crash\u201d) said he believes that his daughter is innocent. COURTESY OF NETFLIX<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nAt the end of her interview, Mackenzie said there\u2019s \u201cnot a moment\u201d when she doesn\u2019t think about Dominic and Davion and she can \u201cfeel the pain\u201d in her chest.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have excessive amounts of remorse. [It] was not intentional.\u201d<\/p>\n
She concluded: \u201cI will do everything I can to prove that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mackenzie is now 21, and currently incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, Ohio.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Her first appeal was denied. Her first parole hearing is scheduled for September 2037.<\/p>\n
