Up close, though, the white shapes dotting the straps, arcing over the bodice and running up the lace-up back were unmistakably dental.<\/p>\nThe dress\u2019 straps, hips and ribcage were all dotted with pearly whites, with more running up the lace-up back. The gown is the work of 23-year-old designer Sahra Davaran, who created it as part of her \u201cTeeth Couture\u201d graduate collection for Toronto Metropolitan University\u2019s fashion program. The five-look series \u2014 with pieces named Teeth, Enamel, Cavity, Root Canal and Amalgam \u2014 used upward of 50,000 resin teeth in total, including one dress covered entirely in them.<\/p>\n
Davaran expected a polarizing reaction. \u201cSome people are really disgusted. Some people hate it, and some people love it, and that\u2019s exactly what I want,\u201d she told us.<\/p>\nDavaran\u2019s thesis collection, titled \u201cTeeth Couture,\u201d spanned five looks and used upward of 50,000 resin teeth in total. Davaran was browsing Amazon for fake meat props when the algorithm served up a listing for resin teeth. She impulsively ordered a pack, started tinkering with jewelry, and eventually expanded the idea into a full collection.<\/p>\n
She set up a bi-weekly subscription with a manufacturer in China \u2014 500 teeth per shipment \u2014 and spent roughly $6,000 to $7,000 on teeth alone. (\u201cI was so worried they were going to ask if I had a clinic or something, but they didn\u2019t,\u201d she laughed.)<\/p>\n
Bhabha\u2019s dress, the collection\u2019s second look, is called \u201cEnamel\u201d; Davaran constructed it from 300 individually cut pieces of shirting material, singeing each raw edge with a soldering iron to create a rippled, almost geological texture. The pair have a track record of tapping emerging local designers for Bhabha\u2019s red carpet moments.<\/p>\n
\u201cCanada has so many talented designers, especially emerging and student designers, who deserve larger platforms and visibility,\u201d the stylist said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
