In some cases, both are terminal. A suicide note was found at the scene. <span class=\"credit\">Alex Berliner\/BEI \/ Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/24\/celebrity-news\/how-martin-short-overcame-years-of-family-tragedy\/\">Short is no stranger to grief<\/a>, having lost his older brother David in a car accident when he was just 12 years old and his mom to cancer when he was 17.<\/p>\n<p>His father died from complications of a stroke just two years later.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/05\/10\/celebrity-news\/martin-short-speaks-out-on-daughter-katherines-death\/\">Short got candid on Katherine\u2019s sudden death<\/a> for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a nightmare for the family,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/martin-short-facing-tragedy-with-joy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told \u201cCBS Sunday Morning.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Dolman married the \u201cFather of the Bride\u201d star in 1980 and along with Katherine, who was 42 at the time of her death, the couple shared son Oliver, 40, and Henry, 36. (The family is pictured here together in 2006). <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Dolman (pictured here with her husband in 1987) died of ovarian cancer at age 58. <span class=\"credit\">Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Short explained that his daughter \u201cfought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she [could] until she couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cFather of the Bride\u201d star added that he felt it was important for him to speak out about the circumstances of Katherine\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\">\u201cIf I said to the audience, any audience I was in, \u2018How many have lost anyone from suicide?\u2019 you\u2019d be stunned by the hands that would go [up]. \u2018How many have mental health in their family?\u2019 You\u2019d be stunned by the hands that would go up,\u201d he detailed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\">\u201cSo why pretend that this is your own pain?\u201d he added. \u201cMaybe by sharing your pain it will help other people\u2019s pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Short (pictured here with his wife, daughter and Goldie Hawn in 2003) explained to the New York Times that Katherine\u2019s passing felt different, stating: \u201cThis is your child.
