We have an opportunity to talk about our libraries and talk about literacy,\u201d said Parker of Camilla\u2019s NYPL visit. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>On Wednesday,Camilla and Parker, accompanied by NYPL president Dr. Anthony Marx, were shown books and documents with ties to both the UK and the USA \u2014 including a copy of the Declaration of Independence, a plan of New York by British Army cartographer John Montresor from 1775, and an etching of the protest against the Bill to repeal the American Stamp Act, annotated by Benjamin Franklin.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a letter from English author Jane Austen to a pal celebrating the sale of her novel \u201cPride and Prejudice.\u201d Camilla was especially wowed to see an early copy of \u201cNow We are Six\u201d by A.A. Milne, author of the original Winnie the Pooh books.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Parker walked Camilla out the New York Public Library, located on Fifth Avenue. <span class=\"credit\">via REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOh! Favorite, favorite, favorite!\u201d enthused the queen, as she was told the book contained some of the first drawings of Roo the kangaroo, by illustrator E.H. Shepard.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1987, the Fifth Avenue library has been home to the stuffed animals \u2014\u00a0Winnie-the-Pooh,\u00a0Eeyore, Piglet, Kanga and Tigger \u2014\u00a0that once belonged to Milne\u2019s son, Christopher Robin, and inspired the book characters. But the original Roo was long lost, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nypl.org\/about\/locations\/schwarzman\/childrens-center-42nd-street\/pooh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the NYPL website<\/a>, in an apple orchard.<\/p>\n<p>In a symbolic gesture, Queen Camilla presented the library a handcrafted replacement, created in the UK by toy manufacturer Merrythought.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Wintour even took off her sunglasses to greet the queen. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Camilla greeted Dame Anna Wintour, the global chief content officer and artist director at Cond\u00e9 Nast, with a kiss. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking at a reception attended by Vogue\u2019s queen, Anna Wintour, Parker \u2014 whose \u201cSATC\u201d character famously was jilted at the library by Mr. Big \u2014\u00a0said of Camilla\u2019s visit, \u201cIt\u2019s great for all New Yorkers. We have an opportunity to talk about our libraries and talk about literacy. I know that the queen has spent a great deal of time focusing on that in her country.\u00a0She mentioned there was an opportunity for a sort of bridge project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The star added: \u201cIn the face of a lot of cuts in libraries and education, and public schools, my great focus today is on funding for libraries. Access to information is one of the most consequential gifts we have typically given Americans. I know that matters a great deal to [the queen. Some think that\u2019s political, I think it\u2019s fundamental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While at the library, Camilla \u2014\u00a0who has made advocacy for survivors of domestic violence a passion project \u2014 met representatives city and state charities and agencies for domestic violence prevention and social services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u201d show host Jenna Bush Hager also hosted a panel with Camilla, saying \u201c\u201cIt has been a great delight to share a common love of books with the queen, and a shared determination to make room for them in as many hearts and homes as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Camilla read \u201cWinnie-the-Pooh\u201d to NYC schoolkids, alongside A.A.
