The sky is overcast.\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0_HMP-Frankland-incident.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"ImageCaption_caption__j7HRu\" data-testid=\"image-caption\">\n<p aria-label=\"The attack happened at high security HMP Frankland prison\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">The attack happened at high security HMP Frankland prison<cite aria-label=\"Image: PA\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-credit__wlx1W\" data-testid=\"caption-credit\">(Image: PA)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<p><\/button><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A murderer will spend a further four years in jail after he attacked another inmate by <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/knife-crime\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">slashing<\/a> him in the neck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">John Henry Sayers who has been dubbed the &#8216;Godfather of Newcastle&#8217; was left hospitalised after being <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/crime\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">attacked<\/a> by Donald Gaote-Oueyeya at <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/prisons\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">HMP Frankland<\/a> in April last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Gaote-Oueyeya, 26, was serving a life sentence for killing a 17-year-old boy during a gang attack in Wandsworth, London, when he was also 17, <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/news\/north-east-news\/john-henry-sayers-newcastle-frankland-33966348\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Chronicle Live reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A hearing at Teesside Crown Court was told how shortly after 6pm on April 30, 2025, prisoners at HMP Frankland were out of their cells and taking part in &#8220;association time&#8221; when Gaote-Oueyeya ran at Sayers on the prison landing and attacked him &#8220;without warning&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Gaote-Oueyeya used an improvised blade, believed to have been made from a piece of prison cutlery to repeatedly slash at Sayers.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"image-group\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"SlideViewerButton_slide-viewer-button__BDJoG\" aria-label=\"Open image viewer\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-controls=\"image-lightbox\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-embed__0T8WX false\" data-testid=\"imageembed-37173238\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"37173238\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"image\">\n<div class=\"ImageEmbed_image-container__2AIQm\">\n<figure class=\"Figure_figure__Uce4f\" style=\"--figure-aspect-ratio:1.5\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0_John-Henry-Sayers.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"ImageCaption_caption__j7HRu\" data-testid=\"image-caption\">\n<p aria-label=\"John Henry Sayers, dubbed the 'Godfather of Newcastle' was attacked behind bars \" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">John Henry Sayers, dubbed the &#8216;Godfather of Newcastle&#8217; was attacked behind bars <cite aria-label=\"Image: Newcastle Chronicle\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-credit__wlx1W\" data-testid=\"caption-credit\">(Image: Newcastle Chronicle)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<p><\/button><\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Sayers sustained a &#8220;fairly deep&#8221; 7cm laceration to his neck, a 5cm wound to the right side of his forehead and a 2cm cut to his right ring finger, the court heard. He was taken to hospital for further treatment. The court heard that the weapon was never recovered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A prison officer also received several cuts to his right arm and a cut on his eye while trying to intervene. The court heard that his injuries were not caused deliberately and Gaote-Oueyeya was sorry that the officer had been caught up in the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a victim personal statement written in May last year, the officer told the court: &#8220;I still think about the incident itself. Although I haven&#8217;t really been back to work properly since, I can&#8217;t really put it into context the true impact of it yet but it does make me think more about the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t expecting myself to pick up injuries from a weapon, even though I know it&#8217;s prison. It does make me realise that we are not fully safe in the jail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In mitigation, Christopher Dunn said there was no excuse for Gaote-Oueyeya&#8217;s actions.
