She finished the look with vintage Nike Swoosh saddle oxfords and a Chanel white gold and diamond Lune ring.<\/p>\n<p>The actress\u2019 longtime stylist, Tara Swennen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/kristen-stewart-tara-swennen-cannes-red-carpet-style\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Vogue <\/a>the lightweight underpinnings made the set look \u201cmore revealing than it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>For the evening premiere, she chose a red and black knit Chanel gown with high-top Ruby Brown sneakers from her closet. <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>In 2018, the actress pulled off her Louboutins on the Palais steps to protest the festival\u2019s unwritten heels-only rule. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Stylist Tara Swennen, who has dressed the Chanel ambassador since she was 14, told Vogue she thinks Cannes\u2019 rules are \u201cmalleable.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Last year\u2019s Cannes wardrobe included a nearly fully unbuttoned tweed jumpsuit and a baseball cap with a shorts suit. <span class=\"credit\">Corbis via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While she may have gotten away with her sneakers at the photo call, the casual shoe is specifically verboten at Grand Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Lumi\u00e8re gala screenings.<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t stop Stewart; for the evening\u2019s premiere, she swapped into a red and black knit Chanel gown from the house\u2019s fall 2026 collection, the loose knit showing off a black bra and high-waisted briefs underneath.<\/p>\n<p>She paired it with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chanel.com\/us\/watches\/p\/H9857\/premiere-ribbon-red-watch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">Chanel Premiere Ribbon red watch<\/a> ($6,050) and a Comete Harmonie ring \u2014 plus black Ruby Brown 3306 Dames high-top sneakers that she flashed as she made her way across the red carpet.<\/p>\n<p>Both pairs of kicks came straight from Stewart\u2019s own closet, Swennen told Vogue.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>The festival\u2019s controversy over women\u2019s footwear dates to 2015, when several women were turned away from a screening for wearing flats. <span class=\"credit\">Corbis via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cThings have to change immediately,\u201d Stewart said of the gendered dress code in 2018. \u201cYou simply cannot ask me to do something that you are not asking him.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stewart\u2019s dress code dodges have become a Cannes tradition. In 2016, she ditched her Christian Louboutin heels at the \u201cPersonal Shopper\u201d premiere, changing into a pair of beat-up Vans after finishing the step-and-repeat. She kicked off the festival in a series of red-carpet T-shirts and returned the following year with a bleached buzz cut.<\/p>\n<p>Her most pointed protest came in 2018, when she <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2018\/05\/18\/kristen-stewart-continues-to-protest-high-heels-policy-at-cannes\/\">pulled off her Christian Louboutin heels<\/a> on the Palais steps. At the time, the festival\u2019s unwritten dress code required women to wear high heels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings have to change immediately,\u201d Stewart told IndieWire. \u201cIf [a man and I] were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, \u2018Excuse me, young lady, you\u2019re not wearing heels. You cannot come in\u2019 \u2014 then [I\u2019m going to say], \u2018Neither is my friend.
