The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (<a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/lifestyle\/motoring\/uk-drivers-risk-prosecution-failing-37173434\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">DVLA<\/a>) maintains tight regulations around <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/lifestyle\/motoring\/\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">driving <\/a>standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Under the regulations, drivers must renew their photocard <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/major-change-anyone-who-uses-36822632\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">licence <\/a>every ten years. Failing to do so could result in serious consequences, including a fine of up to \u00a31,000, not being able to get motor insurance, and prosecution if you are stopped by the police. The good news is that DVLA sends a deadline reminder to drivers before their current licence ends, often in the form of a letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The reminder states: &#8220;Our records show that your driving licence, which must be renewed every ten years by law, is due to expire.&#8221; The letter will also explain how to renew your full driving licence or provisional driving licence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Motorists can apply online or at participating Post Office branches. Alternatively, if you no longer want to renew your licence, it should be returned to the DVLA with a letter of explanation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">When renewing your licence online, the application fee is \u00a314. Gov.uk says your driving licence should arrive within a week if you apply online. You should receive a reminder from the DVLA when the driving licence expiry date is approaching.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It is the licence holder&#8217;s responsibility to ensure the photocard is renewed on time. If you do not receive a reminder letter from the DVLA then this will not be deemed a valid excuse for driving with an expired photocard driving licence.
