To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock,\u201d the singer said in a December 2024 documentary. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s still kind of sinking in a bit,\u201d Collins said in his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WdGmydR715Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cPhil Collins: Drummer First\u201d<\/a> documentary,\u00a0which premiered in December 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve spent all my life playing drums,\u201d he added. \u201cTo suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks then I\u2019ll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I\u2019ve used up my air miles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His son Nicholas Collin noted the singer underwent a \u201cbig surgery on his neck [in 2015] that stemmed from all those years playing drums and bad posture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phil also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2017\/06\/08\/phil-collins-gets-stitches-after-nasty-fall\/\">suffers from drop foot<\/a>, a condition that makes it difficult to lift the front part of one\u2019s foot, which has made drumming nearly impossible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Phil (pictured with his daughter Lily Collins in 2012) underwent a \u201cbig surgery on his neck [in 2015] that stemmed from all those years playing drums and bad posture.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Todd Williamson<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>He also suffers from drop foot, a condition that makes it difficult to lift the front part of one\u2019s foot. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Six months before officially quitting music, the Grammy winner went public with his health woes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m kind of physically challenged a bit, which is very frustrating because I\u2019d love to be playing up there,\u201d he\u00a0lamented on \u201cBBC Breakfast\u201d in September 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can barely hold a stick with this hand, so there are certain physical things which get in the way,\u201d Phil explained. \u201cI don\u2019t know if I want to go out on the road anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In February 2025, Phil heartbreakingly <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2025\/02\/21\/entertainment\/phil-collins-74-is-very-sick-years-after-losing-drumming-ability\/\">revealed that his condition has only worsened<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>In February 2025, Phil revealed his condition has only worsened. <span class=\"credit\">David Wolff \u2013 Patrick<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Speaking of trying to return to the studio, Phil said, \u201cI\u2019m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I\u2019ve been sick, I mean\u00a0<em>very<\/em>\u00a0sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, he called the issues an \u201congoing thing\u201d in a January BBC Two interview, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/music\/news\/phil-collins-health-issues-knee-surgeries-kidney-problems-1236637084\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a 24 hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication,\u201d he revealed. \u201cI\u2019ve had challenges with my knee \u2014 I had everything that could go wrong with me did go wrong with me. I got COVID in hospital my kidneys started to back up.
