And not that the joke wasn\u2019t well written, but would you say that this generation of roasting and comics, they do stuff that most people would think are in poor taste but it still makes you laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the roast, Hinchcliffe and Gillis also <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/05\/11\/celebrity-news\/tony-hinchcliffe-mocks-sheryl-underwoods-late-husbands-suicide-at-kevin-hart-roast\/\">made jokes about Underwood\u2019s late husband<\/a>, who committed suicide. The former \u201cThe Talk\u201d host and her husband \u2014 whose name she\u2019s never revealed \u2014 were married for three years when he took his own life in 1990.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Gillis also elicited a strong reaction from the crowd when he joked, \u201cKevin\u2019s so short they\u2019re going to have to lynch him from a bonsai tree.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images for Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Underwood also addressed the comedians\u2019 jokes about her late husband, who committed suicide \u2014 though the former \u201cThe Talk\u201d host was laughing in the audience, she told ET that the jokes were \u201cin poor taste.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although Underwood was shown laughing in the audience at the time, she told ET that the jokes were \u201cin poor taste.\u201d She also said both comedians called her beforehand to tell her that they were going to talk about her late husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got a chance to talk to Tony Hinchcliffe and he told me where he was going, and then Shane Gillis called me and we talked about it,\u201d she shared. \u201cThey came with respect but I didn\u2019t know exactly what they were gonna say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said of her response to them, \u201cLike when they talked to me about how they were coming at me, I said, \u2018They better be funny.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea Handler \u2014 who\u2019s good friends with Hart and took part in the roast \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/05\/20\/celebrity-news\/chelsea-handler-blasts-shane-gillis-and-tony-hinchcliffe-after-kevin-hart-roast\/\">blasted Hinchcliffe and Gillis <\/a>on Wednesday\u2019s episode of \u201cDeon Cole\u2019s Funny Knowing You\u201d podcast, calling them \u201cracists, bigots, and sexist.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Underwood did say that both Gillis and Hinchcliffe called her beforehand to tell her they were going to bring up her late husband. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images for Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>But Underwood noted that she didn\u2019t know what was going to be said. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images for Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t find those jokes funny,\u201d she said. \u201cLynching Black people is not a joke.
