I genuinely thought he had drowned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In suggesting to Varley there were numerous inconsistencies in the accounts he gave at the hospital and to police, Mr Wright said: \u201cYou have been making it up from the start to the end, haven\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Varley said: \u201cI would say it was a very traumatic day, sir. \u201cIt was the worst day of our lives. I could hardly speak that day. I was all over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Wright said: \u201cI am going to suggest that when you got to the hospital your apparent state of distress was a complete charade.\u201d Varley replied: \u201cThat\u2019s not true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Wright said: \u201cAnd your inability then to be able to settle and answer questions was because you were working overtime to come up with an explanation for what you had done to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThat is not true,\u201d said Varley. Mr Wright said: \u201cBuying time to try to think of a way out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Varley said: \u201cThat\u2019s not correct.\u201d The defendant denied that later police examination of images on his phone demonstrated he had repeatedly ill-treated the child,<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Wright suggested that Varley recorded Preston playing with his genitals for \u201cyour own sexual gratification\u201d. Varley said: \u201cYou are 100% wrong. I found it to be funny. At the time I felt it was fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Wright put it to Varley that by July 2023 his partner also had a sexual interest in Preston. Varley said: \u201cJohn and I don\u2019t have a sexual interest in children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Wright said: \u201cThat little boy was the plaything of both of you, wasn\u2019t he?\u201d \u201cNo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Wright said: \u201cAnd you each ill-treated him, didn\u2019t you?\u201d Varley said: \u201cNo we did not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Wright said: \u201cYou were obsessed with this boy in a sexual nature, weren\u2019t you?\u201d The defendant replied: \u201cYou are wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Varley denied he was \u201cstruggling to cope\u201d with Preston, would \u201close his temper\u201d and had physically abused the boy. He said: \u201cI would give anything for that boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Wright said: \u201cYou were abusing this boy, weren\u2019t you?\u201d Varley said: \u201cNo, we were not. I just know he was in a safe and loving home.
