The popular creator seemingly has at least six shows airing\u00a0at any given moment \u2013 and they attract movie stars like Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, and Michelle Pfeiffer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood talks about Sheridan like he\u2019s the \u201cmiddle America\u201d whisperer, since his shows are hits with <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/08\/entertainment\/real-cowboys-weigh-in-on-yellowstone-reveal-what-the-hit-show-gets-right-and-wrong\/\">often an misunderstood audience<\/a>. But, the real secret to his success is simple.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s the king of dad shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Kevin Costner (pictured in \u201cYellowstone\u201d) makes dads aspire to feel \u201ccool and tough,\u201d said \u201cDad Shows\u201d author Liam Mathews. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sheridan\u2019s shows like \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d (pictured, with Marc Menchaca and Kelly Reilly) rarely have main characters below 40.   <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Sheridan\u2019s vast portfolio of shows fits the bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The prolific writer\/producer burst onto the TV scene in 2018 with \u201cYellowstone,\u201d which starred Costner as John Dutton, the patriarch of a ranch family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sheridan hasn\u2019t let up in nearly a decade since. He\u2019s exec producing its two <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/05\/14\/entertainment\/yellowstone-spinoff-dutton-ranch-is-a-winner-review\/\">spinoffs, \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d <\/a>starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/23\/entertainment\/yellowstone-gives-boring-kayce-a-marshals-spinoff-review\/\">\u201cMarshals\u201d starring Luke Grimes<\/a>. He\u2019s also got the Sylvester Stallone-led \u201cTulsa King\u201d and \u201cLandman\u201d starring Billy Bob Thornton, among other shows. There were a handful of \u201cYellowstone\u201d prequels, starring big names like Ford and Sam Elliott.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Even Sheridan\u2019s show aimed at women, like \u201cThe Madison\u201d with Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell (pictured) are centered around a dad.  <span class=\"credit\">Paramount<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sheridan shows include movie stars famous since the 80s, like Sylvester Stallone (pictured in \u201cTulsa King with Jay Will and Martin Starr).  <span class=\"credit\">Brian Douglas\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even his attempt at a show aimed at women \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/13\/entertainment\/taylor-sheridans-the-madison-is-a-michelle-pfeiffer-showcase-that-demonizes-nyc-review\/\">\u201cThe Madison,\u201d <\/a>which follows a widow, Stacy (Pfeiffer), as she grieves her husband, Preston (Kurt Russell) \u2013 is built entirely around Preston\u2019s shadow. Despite his character dying, Russell appears via flashback in every episode, playing a rugged dad who loved to fish.<\/p>\n<p>A dad show doesn\u2019t always need to center on a character who is a father, and its audience doesn\u2019t need to only include Gen X and boomer men \u2014 although, both of those qualities help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s more nebulous than that, and Sheridan has nailed the formula.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Luke Grimes (pictured on \u201cMarshals\u201d) is a young Sheridan leading man, at 42.  <span class=\"credit\">Fred Hayes\/CBS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Dad shows like \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d (pictured, with Rip and Beth) are about men who \u201ctake care of business,\u201d said Mathews.  <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mathews explained that this type of show has an element of \u201cwish fulfillment\u201d from the audience, because when the average person watches a show like \u201cYellowstone\u201d he can imagine that he is \u201ccool and tough like Kevin Costner.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shows in this category are typically about men who \u201ctake care of business,\u201d he explained.\u00a0They encounter problems that they fix, \u201cwhether with their minds, or with their fists or with guns \u2013 whatever tools they have available to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheridan characters love solving problems, giving monologues reflecting on the good old days, and ruminating on the knowledge they\u2019ve accumulated about life, nature, and human foibles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Outside of Sheridan\u2019s purview, \u201cReacher\u201d with Alan Ritchson (pictured) is also a peak dad show.  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Amazon\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sheridan\u2019s leading ladies like Ali Larter (pictured on \u201cLandman\u201d with Michelle Randolph) are often over 40.  <span class=\"credit\">Emerson Miller\/Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Outside of Sheridan\u2019s purview, Prime Video\u2019s \u201cReacher\u201d (starring Alan Ritchson) is another example of a peak show in the genre, and that character doesn\u2019t have kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anyone\u2019s wondering who\u2019s watching \u2018Reacher,\u2019 it\u2019s my dad,\u201d one<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lydiaatar\/status\/1738455160953942261\"> person posted on X,<\/a> formerly Twitter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Millennials and Gen Z women can enjoy dad shows, too, but another key quality is that the main character must be above 30 \u2014 and ideally above 40.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sheridan\u2019s shows are essentially the opposite of HBO\u2019s \u201cEuphoria,\u201d which <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/04\/10\/entertainment\/how-euphoria-was-a-crazy-starmaker-for-zendaya-jacob-elordi-and-sydney-sweeney\/\">has Gen Z\u2019s biggest stars<\/a> \u2013 Zendaya, 29, Jacob Elordi, 28,\u00a0 and Sydney Sweeney, 28.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sam Elliott (pictured at the \u201cLandman\u201d premiere on April 16) has been in a few Sheridan shows.  <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sheridan (pictured with Costner in 2018) writes characters who monologue about the good old days.  <span class=\"credit\">Penske Media via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t catch Sheridan featuring actors like that as his stars. Sure, his shows include younger cast members here and there, like \u201cLandman\u2019s\u201d Michelle Randolph, 28, but she plays a side character. She\u2019s the problem child that the show\u2019s leading man, Billy Bob Thornton, has to deal with.<\/p>\n<p>The stars of the Sheridan universe have often been famous since the \u201880s\u00a0 \u2013 \u201cYellowstone\u201d had Costner, 71, \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d has Annette Bening, 67, and Ed Harris, 75, \u201cLandman,\u201d has Thornton, 70, \u201cTulsa King\u201d has Stallone, 79.<\/p>\n<p>Grimes, 42, (who stars on the \u201cYellowstone\u201d spinoff \u201cMarshals\u201d) is Sheridan\u2019s youngest current leading man, and he\u2019s still on the other side of 40.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sheridan seems to like providing \u201ceye candy for older guys,\u201d said Matthews, such as Beth (pictured in \u201cDutton Ranch\u201d).  <span class=\"credit\">Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Leading ladies in Sheridan shows are often above 40, like Pfeiffer (pictured in \u201cThe Madison\u201d).  <span class=\"credit\">Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sheridan also seems committed to providing some \u201ceye candy for older guys,\u201d Mathews noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This quality isn\u2019t essential to dad shows, but it also rounds them out.\u00a0His leading ladies include Reilly, 48, Pfeiffer, 68, and Ali Larter, 50.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The character at the center of a dad show \u201cneeds to have some life experience,\u201d said Mathews.
