Digwa used a 21cm blade, he carried as part of his Sikh faith, to stab Nowak, on December 3. Shocking police footage caught the moment the 18-year-old was <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/henry-nowak-vickrum-digwa-southampton-37234806\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">handcuffed by police<\/a> as he lay dying in Southampton, after Digwa falsely accused him of being drunk and launching a racist attack. The law officers have 28 days from sentencing to carefully consider the case and make a decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">During sentencing at Southampton Crown Court, Judge William Mousley KC said Digwa showed a &#8220;callous disregard&#8221; for the well-being of his victim as he continued to make films while &#8220;ignoring much of his desperation at having been stabbed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The family of the 23-year-old murderer have apologised to the family of the victim and for bringing the Sikh Community into &#8220;disrepute&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The ceremonial blade Digwa used to stab Nowak, known as a Kirpan, must be carried by Sikhs in accordance with their faith. Under the current law, a practising Sikh may carry a Kirpan close to the body but using it in an act of aggression is illegal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a statement, the murder&#8217;s family said: &#8220;We apologise to the Sikh community for our son&#8217;s actions which have unfairly brought the community into disrepute. We ask that this tragedy is not used by anyone to inflame division or hostility towards any community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The statement comes as the murderer&#8217;s mother, Kiran Kaur, awaits sentencing for assisting an offender by taking the knife her son used back to the nearby family home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The family&#8217;s statement also said: &#8220;The loss of a young life is a grief that no family should ever have to carry. We are deeply sorry for the pain and suffering the Nowak family has had to endure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;We love Vickrum. We will continue to love him. That love does not stand in opposition to the sorrow we feel for the Nowak family. Both are real, and both will remain with us for the rest of our lives. We would give anything to turn back time so the path of both Henry and Vickrum never crossed that night. We cannot change what has happened, we just hope that no further pain is caused in its name.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The police bodcam footage from the incident, showing Nowak being placed in cuffs, has been slammed and dubbed &#8220;shocking&#8221; by a Cabinet Officer minister. Nick Thomas-Symonds said: &#8220;It is harrowing, and it is absolutely shocking, and the conduct of the police, when you look at it at the scene, is shocking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Watchdog investigators from the Independent Office for Police Conduct will meet the family of the victim amid outrage over his treatment by cops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Henry&#8217;s father Mark Nowak, speaking after Digwa was sentenced on Monday, said: &#8220;We believe the officers involved remain on duty although we understand some may since have resigned. One was allowed to leave the force before she had given an account to the Independent Office of Police Conduct of what happened that evening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Comparing the treatment of his son with that of his killer, he told journalists: &#8220;His murderer, however, was afforded decency.
