The \u201cAmericans\u201d actor is fantastic \u2013 but he\u2019s not a household name like Nicole Kidman or Steve Martin, and he\u2019s not a trendy A-lister who makes headlines every time he sneezes, like Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, or Jacob Elordi.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to many other shows, it has a modest cast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also not romantic or sexy, like \u201cHeated Rivalry,\u201d or the recent hit, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/11\/entertainment\/the-next-heated-rivalry-is-here-with-off-campus-review\/\">\u201cOff Campus.\u201d\u00a0<\/a>It doesn\u2019t have huge action setpieces, like the shows in the \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d world.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all that, \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d has become a phenomenon, for good reason.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cue Corona\u2019s \u201cThe Rhythm of the Night.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Compared to many other shows, \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d starring Stephen Root and Matthew Rhys (pictured) has a modest cast.  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d starring Matthew Rhys (pictured) doesn\u2019t have sex or huge action setpieces.  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The horror-comedy is set on the fictional New England island town of the same name. It has the air of a Stephen King story \u2013 but it\u2019s original\u00a0\u2013 sprinkled with \u201cParks and Recreation\u201d (creator Katie Dippold was a writer on the latter).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The town is quaint. There\u2019s a lighthouse; there\u2019s a tavern called The Salty Whale.\u00a0It\u2019s also cursed. The fog may kill you. The inn is haunted. You might go to a party, end up in a trance, and nearly drown in a bizarre ritual led by a lady in an antler-headdress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) is desperate to ignore the danger, attract tourists and make the place, \u201cthe next Martha\u2019s Vineyard.\u201d The \u201cJaws\u201d comparisons are strong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The town in \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d (pictured) is quaint.  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>In \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d starring Rhys and Root (pictured), the town is cursed, the fog may kill you.  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other locals \u2013 like Wyck (Stephen Root) aren\u2019t keen on visitors, determined to warn everyone about the spooky supernatural happenings. As much as Tom tries to dismiss Wyck as a conspiracy-minded \u201chick,\u201d the latter is often right.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d perfectly threads the needle between horror and comedy.\u00a0Many other shows have tried and failed to nail that balance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d franchise sometimes attempts it, and spirals into messy nonsense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat We Do in the Shadows\u201d was delightful, but much more of a comedy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Mayor Tom (pictured in \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d) is determined to attract tourists.  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Few shows nail the horror \/ comedy balance like \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d (pictured with Root).  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Epix show \u201cFrom,\u201d HBO\u2019s \u201cWelcome to Derry,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/13\/mike-flanagans-the-fall-of-the-house-of-usher-review\/\">Mike Flanagan\u2019s shows<\/a> are somewhat similar, but they\u2019re all much heavier on horror than humor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s rare that a show succeeds at an even split.\u00a0And, as it mixes genres, \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d doesn\u2019t feel like it\u2019s trying to do too many things at once.\u00a0Each episode has a consistency of vision. There are a lot of disparate elements, but \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d never seems like throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. It\u2019s throwing darts with sharp precision, and hitting the bullseye.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite evoking genuine chills, the show also manages to feel cozy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It makes you want to go have a drink at The Salty Whale on a brisk fall night (just ignore the creepy old fashioned torture chair in the basement!)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Kate O\u2019Flynn in \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d (pictured with Kevin Carroll) manages to be both chilling and cozy.  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We get to know all the quirky locals \u2013 like the prickly Patricia (Kate O\u2019Flynn), the gruff sheriff, Bechir (Kevin Carroll), or Tom\u2019s rebellious teen son, Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick).\u00a0Hamish Linklater plays the mysterious founder, Richard Warren. <\/p>\n<p>The town has all the charm of Stars Hollow, mixed with a dose of \u201cTwin Peaks.\u201d\u00a0Fans of \u201cGilmore Girls\u201d wouldn\u2019t seem like they overlap much with fans of David Lynch, but \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d is able to appeal to those separate audiences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like \u201cThe X-Files,\u201d it has a \u201csupernatural spook of the week\u201d format that makes it easily digestible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It helps that episode lengths frequently clock in at 40 minutes (or less!)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In this age of bloated run times (<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/05\/31\/entertainment\/euphoria-ending-explained-rues-fate\/\">the \u201cEuphoria\u201d finale<\/a> was 93 minutes long; the \u201cStranger Things\u201d finale was over 2 hours long), each installment feels downright brisk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>In the age of bloated run times, \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d (pictured with Carroll) is easily digestible.  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d has drawn comparisons to \u201cTwin Peaks.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even with all those factors casting a wide net to ensnare various audiences, a show set in a small town with \u201cissue of the week\u201d plotting sounds too-small scale to captivate the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d remains surprising, unique, and artistic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t a feel-good, sentimental show like the Bill Lawrence world (\u201cRooster,\u201d \u201cTed Lasso,\u201d \u201cShrinking\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Despite its primal frights, it\u2019s also not overly disturbing or abrasive (like \u201cEuphoria,\u201d \u201cBeef,\u201d or the new <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/03\/entertainment\/cape-fear-review-amy-adams-javier-bardems-revival-is-a-brutal-summer-thriller\/\">\u201cCape Fear\u201d series<\/a>), either. It finds that emotional place between those lines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The show is smart, without being a high-minded watch that demands a lot of brainpower.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not reinventing the wheel. \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d includes some plots that other shows have done before\u00a0 \u2013 there\u2019s a drug trip episode; there\u2019s a \u201cparty gone wrong\u201d episode\u201d \u2013 but it puts its own stamp on them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also zags into unexpected detours, like a flashback episode to the island\u2019s history. \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The show (pictured with Flynn) isn\u2019t sentimental, but it\u2019s also not overly disturbing.  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>There\u2019s a buffet of fan theories, for those who like to speculate about the lore of \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d (pictured).  <span class=\"credit\">Apple TV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For viewers who like to dive into theories, the mythology offers a buffet\u00a0 \u2013 like how people born on the island can\u2019t go to the mainland. Reddit and TikTok theory threads are booming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, this isn\u2019t \u201cLost.\u201d If you <em>don\u2019t <\/em>want to theory-craft, and you prefer to let a show just wash over you, it\u2019s watchable that way, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d reminds us that a show can be engaging on a small scale, without much razzle-dazzle, if the writing and performances are strong, the setting is specific, and its vision is clear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t need movie stars, explosions, explicit sex, or splashy spectacle. It doesn\u2019t need to be a sequel or spinoff.\u00a0Whenever you tune in to a given episode, you can\u2019t predict what you\u2019ll get.
