{"id":4867,"date":"2026-06-05T22:54:35","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T22:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/mayim-bialik-details-extreme-side-effects-of-glp-1-drug\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T22:54:35","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T22:54:35","slug":"mayim-bialik-details-extreme-side-effects-of-glp-1-drug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/mayim-bialik-details-extreme-side-effects-of-glp-1-drug\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayim Bialik details &#8216;extreme&#8217; side effects of GLP-1 drug"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F3%2F2026%2F06%2F129886287.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Mayim Bialik labeled her experience with GLP-1 drugs a \u201cnightmare\u201d in a candid new essay. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in the limelight, with my appearance scrutinized weekly from the time I starred in my own NBC show at 14,\u201d the \u201cBlossom\u201d actress\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/mayim-bialik-glp1-side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote in a Free Press essay<\/a>\u00a0titled \u201cMy GLP-1 Nightmare\u201d published Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was blissfully unaware of my weight back then,\u201d she wrote, describing her younger self as \u201cnaturally lanky and athletic\u201d and being able to eat \u201cwhatever I wanted with no concern for weight gain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2023\/12\/27\/entertainment\/ken-jennings-breaks-silence-on-mayim-bialiks-jeopardy-firing\/\">former \u201cJeopardy!\u201d host<\/a> wrote that as a teen she was \u201cput on medication to <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/01\/03\/mayim-bialik-says-being-a-mopey-teen-kept-her-on-track\/\">manage my moods<\/a>, and weight gain followed me from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bialik, now 50, wrote of acquiring a \u201cdeep sense of shame around my body\u201d by her 40s, when she was \u201cstill actively working as an actress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the time social media arrived \u2014 with its fixation on being thinner, more toned, more surgically perfected \u2014 that pressure tipped into a disordered relationship with food that I have spent years trying to untangle,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2019\/05\/17\/the-evolution-of-the-big-bang-theory-cast\/\">\u201cBig Bang Theory\u201d alum<\/a> wrote.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Mayim Bialik, seen above in 2018 at the Critics Choice Awards, detailed her \u201cnightmare\u201d with GLP-1 drugs in an essay she wrote for the Free Press. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>The actress, seen here in 2024, said her appearance was \u201cscrutinized weekly\u201d from the age of 14, when she starred on \u201cBlossom.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Variety via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Early menopause, she divulged, caused an additional 20 pounds of weight gain she doesn\u2019t \u201cseem to have the discipline, motivation, or time to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill, that\u2019s not why I went on a GLP-1,\u201d the actress continued.  \u201cI <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/article\/celebrities-who-used-ozempic-for-weight-loss\/\">went on a weight-loss drug<\/a> because a doctor told me it might help ease symptoms I\u2019ve struggled with for basically my entire adult life.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Bialik wrote that she was diagnosed with Graves\u2019 disease, an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid, at age 23. Though she was prescribed medication, she didn\u2019t make lifestyle changes \u2014 a move she feels might have \u201cvery slowly made my condition worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The neuroscientist was also diagnosed with Sj\u00f6gren\u2019s syndrome, dysautonomia, connective tissue disease, and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) in later years, and suffered from extreme symptoms of the conditions, including \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2018\/05\/10\/mayim-bialik-opens-up-about-mental-health-struggles\/\">crippling depression<\/a>\u201d and \u201cfull-body rashes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bialik shared that separate three doctors suggested she go on a GLP-1 drug \u201cnot because of the 20 postmenopausal pounds but because the drugs have shown promise in reducing the systemic inflammation that drives autoimmune conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>The actress, pictured above in 2025, wrote that she began to experience weight gain after she was put on medication to manage her moods in her teens. <span class=\"credit\">Corbis via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Bialik, seen above on \u201cJeopardy!,\u201d was later diagnosed with several conditions, including Graves\u2019 disease. <span class=\"credit\">ABC via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMaybe this could be the magic cure,\u201d she recalled of her mindset at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGLP-1s have helped people in serious need. Of that I am certain,\u201d she wrote. \u201cBut nobody talks much about what happens when it goes wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After taking \u201cone shot of the lowest dose of a synthetic GLP-1,\u201d Bialik noted that \u201cto say I had an adverse reaction would be somewhat of an understatement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She detailed \u201cexplosive, uncontrollable diarrhea,\u201d as well as \u201csulfur burps so violent they left me afraid to open my mouth in public,\u201d as some of the worst side-effects. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSneezing attacks every time I tried to eat or drink \u2014 which apparently has a name,\u00a0snatiation,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Doctors for Bialik, seen above in 2023, suggested she try a GLP-1 to help manage her conditions \u2014 not for weight loss. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>The actress, pictured here in 2023, detailed dramatic side effects. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images for Los Angeles LGBT Center<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cCramping. Bloating. Full-body aching, as though I had the flu\u201d Bialik added. \u201cAnd an inability to keep down even small sips of water without sprinting to the bathroom with yet more explosive diarrhea. More than three times, I didn\u2019t make it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shared, \u201cThis drug has a very long half-life; my prescribing doctor had told me to expect at least a week of this, if not more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bialik noted that after experiencing the dramatic side effects, her \u201cbody made its position clear, and I had learned, after decades of overriding it, to finally listen.\u201d She ultimately decided to stop taking the GLP-1 and \u201cfinally went to see a gastroenterologist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The physician told her GLP-1 drugs \u201care extremely disruptive to the body and should not be used outside of a specific, regulated set of serious medical reasons \u2014 namely, life-compromising obesity and its related health consequences\u201d and that she \u201cdid not meet that bar.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Bialik, seen here in \u201cNight Court\u201d with John Larroquette in 2025, ultimately decided to stop the GLP-1. <span class=\"credit\">Nicole Weingart\/NBC via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>A gastroenterologist later confirmed to Bialik, seen here on \u201cThe Big Bang Theory\u201d in 2019, the drugs \u201care extremely disruptive to the body\u201d and she decided to stop taking them. <span class=\"credit\">CBS via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bialik recalled leaving the specialist\u2019s office \u201cfeeling validated,\u201d noting that \u201ca real doctor confirming I was not a freak, that the medication really had done this to me \u2014 and trepidatious that there was more to deal with in the coming weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She concluded the essay with an ironic memory of her appointment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn my way out, I caught a glimpse of my reflection, and I did not recoil,\u201d the \u201cCall Me Kat\u201d actress recounted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not see under my first chin that second chin on which I had been fixating for months \u2014 because it wasn\u2019t there. My cheekbones were visible.
