But at the time, I didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What the <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/06\/05\/entertainment\/jon-cryer-details-two-and-a-half-men-residuals\/\">\u201cTwo and a Half Men\u201d alum<\/a> also didn\u2019t know was that McCarthy was struggling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know that he was going through; he was battling his own demons and had a fractured family relationship with his dad. And he was already starting to have issues with alcohol,\u201d he explained. \u201cNone of this I knew about at the time, so of course he was aloof. (Ringwald and Cryer are pictured in a still from the film.) <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Paramount\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The feeling was apparently mutual.<\/p>\n<p>In his 2021 memoir, <a data-aps-asc-tag=\"pagesix-20\" data-aps-asin=\"1538754274\" data-wrapped-template=\"https:\/\/r.pagesixlink.com?btn_ref=org-282f0dd399864b44&amp;btn_url\" href=\"https:\/\/r.pagesixlink.com?btn_ref=org-282f0dd399864b44&amp;btn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FBrat-80s-Story-Andrew-McCarthy%2Fdp%2F1538754274%3Ftag%3Dpagesix-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fpagesix.com%2F2026%2F06%2F06%2Fentertainment%2Fjon-cryer-reflects-on-filming-pretty-in-pink-with-d-k-andrew-mccarthy%2F%26asc_source%3Dweb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">\u201cBrat: An \u201980s Story,\u201d<\/a> McCarthy wrote that he <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/04\/17\/andrew-mccarthy-on-his-past-love-life-and-near-fatal-addiction\/\">disliked Cryer because he had \u201ca nervous laugh I found irritating.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cSt. Elmo\u2019s Fire\u201d star, 63, wrote about his alcoholism and drug abuse in his memoir.<\/p>\n<p>A year after \u201cPretty in Pink\u201d was released, McCarthy wrote that he was \u201cdrinking to excess on a nearly daily basis\u201d and also became hooked on cocaine.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Cryer, seen here in 2025, said he later found out that McCarthy was struggling with alcohol and personal issues. <span class=\"credit\">Variety via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On 1987\u2019s \u201cLess Than Zero,\u201d he wrote that his coke habit nearly gave him a heart attack.
