The pair befriended lonely Lily at her home in Failsworth, Greater <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/manchester\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Manchester<\/a>. Davey was locked up indefinitely in 1999 for what the judge described as an \u201cunspeakably wicked\u201d murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Preston\u2019s grandmother, Debra Davey, 66, said her daughter, now 43, was aware the details of her crime would resurface once the verdicts were in. She said: \u201cShe\u2019s worried about it all coming out again, but I\u2019ve told her, it\u2019s all about Preston, it isn\u2019t about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Speaking about her grandson\u2019s tragic death she said: \u201cI\u2019ve had some bad things happen in my life, but this is by far the worst.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI was there when he was born in Wythenshawe. It was wonderful. He was with Sarah for five days. She still got to see him after that, she saw him every fortnight with the foster parents\u2026 until he went to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cShe wanted him right from the start. I was diagnosed literally the next day after he was born. They said I couldn\u2019t have him because of that. His foster parents were lovely people, but I didn\u2019t see him after that. Sarah would see him with his foster parents; she liked them, got on with them, they loved Preston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">When they found out the toddler was being adopted by two men, she said the family didn\u2019t agree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI told them I didn\u2019t agree with it and Sarah knew right from the start. Not because it was two men, she just got a horrible feeling about it, a gut feeling. She told social services and the foster parents. Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley were arrested but released on bail as investigations continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said: \u201cIt went on for two years. I used to argue with them [the police] all the time. \u2018Why aren\u2019t they in custody?\u2019 It all took such a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She attended the start of the trial, but ill health kept her away as it progressed: Speaking about Varley, she said: \u201cIt\u2019s killing me. It\u2019s disgusting. Things no-one would think of doing, he\u2019s sick in the head. And McGowan-Fazakerley, of course he knew. You don\u2019t live in the same house as someone and not know what\u2019s going on, especially things like that. I think there\u2019s a lot to come out about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said social services, the adoption agency and hospital staff all have questions to answer about why Preston\u2019s case wasn\u2019t flagged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cYou hope things would change, but it doesn\u2019t, does it. It\u2019s unreal, I can\u2019t take it in really. Alarm bells should have been ringing. When it all happened all we could hear was apologies. But it\u2019s not their grandchild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe want to know what checks were made. They say everything they did was proper, that they didn\u2019t do anything dishonesty. But it\u2019s all really wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve got four granddaughters, he was my only grandson. It\u2019s terrible, I can\u2019t believe he\u2019s gone. I can\u2019t believe Varley pleaded not guilty with all the evidence they had.
