So, when we had our second, I just felt like I didn\u2019t want to waste any second of it and I didn\u2019t want to be on set.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just felt like I needed to be at home with the kids and I enjoyed every minute,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Cuthbert\u2019s role in \u201cEvery Year After\u201d marks her first major acting project in four years, following the 2022 crime film \u201cBandit,\u201d in which she starred alongside Mel Gibson.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian, who got her start as a child model before making her acting debut at 13, rose to fame in the early 2000s with a string of TV and movie roles, including fan-favorite comedies \u201cThe Girl Next Door\u201d and \u201cOld School\u201d as well as the hit drama \u201c24.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her last major role was in the Netflix sitcom \u201cThe Ranch,\u201d which ran for four seasons and ended in 2020, with Cuthbert taking only a handful of smaller roles following the series\u2019 conclusion.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Elisha Cuthbert with her husband Dion Phaneuf and daughter Zaphire at a ceremony for his NHL retirement on November 16, 2021 in Toronto, Canada. <span class=\"credit\">NHLI via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now, with her children \u2014 daughter Zaphire, born in 2017, and son Fable, born in 2022 \u2014 getting older, Cuthbert said she feels ready to return to work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re in school now full time,\u201d she explained on \u201cToday.\u201d \u201cI feel like I have the space and the energy and the heart to kind of leave them and do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuthbert also reflected on the pressures that came with fame during the height of her career in the 2000s, saying she\u2019s glad \u201cEvery Year After\u201d star Sadie Soverall, 24, won\u2019t have to face the same scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a lot of pressure,\u201d she said. \u201cSadie Soverall, it\u2019s nice that she\u2019s in a time now where she doesn\u2019t have to worry about those things. It\u2019s very different.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Elisha Cuthbert at the 2001 Teen Choice Awards. <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the coming-of-age drama, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/09\/entertainment\/the-tv-romance-takeover-has-a-dud-with-every-year-after-review\/\">based on Carley Fortune\u2019s bestselling novel<\/a>, Cuthbert plays Sue, the mother of Sam (Matt Cornett) and Charlie (Michael Bradway).<\/p>\n<p>The actress admitted she wasn\u2019t familiar with Fortune\u2019s books before joining the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s crazy because I hadn\u2019t read any of Carley\u2019s books and then I got on the show,\u201d she said. \u201cObviously had the script, but I wanted to read the novel. And then I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m a superfan now.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I read all her books, they\u2019re amazing.
