(Nancy and Savannah are seen above).  <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/savannahguthrie<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIf the first two [ransom notes] read like the same person wrote them and everything that followed reads differently, that tells the task force something meaningful about who they\u2019re actually dealing with versus who decided to insert themselves into the story once it went international,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Pack said that investigators will be able to deduce \u201cmeaningful\u201d information if the notes are \u201cauthentic.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first note apparently contained specific operational details that weren\u2019t public at the time,\u201d Pack explained. \u201cWhat she was wearing. The damaged floodlight. Those aren\u2019t details you get from a news report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone was likely there,\u201d he continued. \u201cBased on what\u2019s been reported, the language and tone of those first two notes compared to everything that came after is where the real analytical work is happening right now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Pack weighed in after reports surfaced that officials searching for Savannah Guthrie\u2019s 84-year-old mother <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/06\/22\/celebrity-news\/the-catastrophic-mistake-nancy-guthrie-investigation-suffered-in-its-early-days-report\/\">made a major mistake early on in the investigation. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sources told Air Mail that the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department and the FBI allegedly bungled a chance to find Nancy in early February. The source claimed that a potentially credible ransom note was sent hours after Nancy was reported missing from her Arizona home on Feb. 1. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The ransom notes hold \u201cmeaningful\u201d information about Nancy (seen above with her daughter), Pack said.  <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/savannahguthrie<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Savannah and her siblings (seen above) previously said they are willing to pay the ransom.  <span class=\"credit\">Instagram \/ Savannah Guthrie<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The note, which described accurate details about Nancy\u2019s outfit at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/05\/celebrity-news\/cops-lay-out-exact-timeline-of-nancy-guthries-disappearance-confirm-blood-was-hers-in-day-5-presser\/\">time of her disappearance<\/a>, and the damaged floodlight in her Tucson-area backyard, asked that $4 million in Bitcoin be paid to a Bitcoin address by Feb. 5.<\/p>\n<p>However, investigators chose not to pay the full sum and instead sent just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/11\/celebrity-news\/bitcoin-account-tied-to-nancy-guthries-ransom-note-suddenly-shows-activity\/\">sent $152 to the Bitcoin address<\/a> in the hopes that they could trace the money if it was ever to be cashed out. (As of Tuesday, that balance has not been cashed out.) <\/p>\n<p>Days later, an alleged ransom note from the same I.P. address as the first was allegedly sent on Feb. 6, but the tone was \u201csputtering,\u201d \u201clabored\u201d and \u201cless confident\u201d than the first note. <\/p>\n<p>The purported kidnapper allegedly apologized for Nancy\u2019s death and requested that the ransom be paid<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/06\/22\/celebrity-news\/nancy-guthrie-ransom-note-apologizes-for-kidnapping-death-demands-millions-for-body-report\/\"> in exchange for the return of the senior citizen\u2019s body. <\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nancy (seen here with Savannah) was reported missing on Feb. 1.  <span class=\"credit\">Nathan Congleton\/NBC via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Alleged ransom notes for her release demanded millions in bitcoin in exchange for the release of Nancy (seen above with Savannah).  <span class=\"credit\">WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe task force had to throw up their hands in dismay and concede that \u2026 nothing in the collections of carefully analyzed notes had gotten them any closer to finding the culprits. \u2026 It was too late,\u201d the outlet claimed, adding, \u201cThe damage had been done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe task force had information the public doesn\u2019t have and likely never will,\u201d Pack said. \u201cThe family was part of those conversations. Everyone involved made the best decisions they could with what they knew at that moment, not with what we think we know five months later reading news reports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The retired fed cautioned the public not to question the investigators\u2019 decisions based on public information. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what\u2019s been reported publicly, it sounds like a mousetrap that didn\u2019t spring,\u201d Pack said. \u201cFor whatever reason, the other side didn\u2019t respond the way investigators hoped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on what we know publicly, that\u2019s not a mistake. That\u2019s sometimes how these things go and the full picture may look very different than what we\u2019re seeing from the outside.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cops released a video of an individual outside of Nancy\u2019s home on the night she went missing (seen above).  <span class=\"credit\">FBI<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The individual (above) was masked and appeared to be armed.  <span class=\"credit\">FBI<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nancy was last seen alive when her family dropped her off at her home after dinner on Jan. 31, and she was<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/02\/celebrity-news\/savannah-guthries-mom-84-reported-missing-in-southern-arizona-homicide-detectives-involved\/\"> reported missing<\/a> the next day. Cops concluded that Nancy was probably taken from her home in the middle of the night against her will after discovering a trail of blood outside her home.<\/p>\n<p>In February, police released a horrifying video of<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/23\/celebrity-news\/nancy-guthrie-kidnapping-suspect-caught-on-doorbell-camera-before-her-abduction-report\/\">\u00a0a masked and armed person<\/a> breaking into her home on the night she went missing. Investigators also reportedly conducted DNA testing on a hair sample.
