Tuesday\u2019s episode of \u201cGood Morning America.\u201d<\/a> \u201cBut there was so much going on in my life where I had to do it.\u201d<\/p>\nLong, who was previously diagnosed with Lupus, recalled how she became sick on tour with pneumonia and recalled how she \u201cbarely made it\u201d through two songs during her final show before having to leave early.<\/p>\nMuni Long revealed doctors told her she only had one week to live and that she had to undergo a double lung transplant six months ago on \u201cGood Morning America\u201d Tuesday. Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<\/aside>\nThe \u201cMade For Me\u201d songstress explained how she traveled home for the Thanksgiving holiday and \u201cwoke up in the hospital\u201d to doctors telling her she would need to have surgery.<\/p>\n
\u201cI knew for a really long time that something was wrong,\u201d she said. \u201cEvery day I\u2019m, like, spitting in cups and coughing all the time, trying to take all these medicines to just get through the day.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWith this industry, you\u2019re always in people\u2019s faces,\u201d Long continued. \u201cSo, I\u2019m taking pictures, and I\u2019m just huffing and puffing like I just ran a marathon.\u201d<\/p>\n
While the hitmaker initially felt better at the hospital, she was then told by medical professionals that she had one week left to live.<\/p>\nLong, who was previously diagnosed with Lupus, got pneumonia while on tour. I was like, \u2018That\u2019s rude.\u2019 But they were kind of like, \u2018Hey, this is not a joke. You need to make a choice. You can either go to hospice or you can get these lungs.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Long initially hesitated with her first thought being about her voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut then I look at my son,\u201d she said, referring to her 3-year-old son, Tatum, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Raysean Hairston.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I think about how much more life that I have to live. Quality of life was first. I can\u2019t sing if I\u2019m not here,\u201d the \u201cMake Me Forget\u201d singer continued.<\/p>\nLong \u2014 seen here in February 2025 \u2014 said that when she traveled home for Thanksgiving, doctors told her that she had one week to live if she didn\u2019t get a double lung transplant. Long had a message for those who might find themselves in a similar situation, admitting that she \u201cdid not speak up for herself\u201d when it came to her serious health issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cLupus disproportionally affects Black women, who are just expected to show up and be everything for everybody,\u201d she noted. \u201cDon\u2019t put yourself on the back burner for everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou need to focus on you,\u201d she continued. \u201cYou need to pour into yourself. Don\u2019t be afraid to say no.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
