\u201cThey\u2019re like, \u2018This is successful. When you leave here you\u2019ll be able to make\u2026’\u201d she recalled. \u201cNo. I don\u2019t wanna be Chevy Chase. I don\u2019t wanna be whoever\u2026 I wanna be Leslie. I wanna do everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jones continued: \u201cI would tell them, \u2018Hey, can I be in this sketch?\u2019 \u2018Hey, when do I get to play a man?\u2019 They would let them do other stuff, and then they wouldn\u2019t let me play as much as I wanted to play.\u201d<\/p>\nThe comedian (seen above on the NBC sketch comedy show in 2018) said she asked the writers to stop typecasting her, but they refused. \u201cYou know, there be some racist stuff be happening up through here,\u201d she stated, before claiming that \u201cmisogyny is heavier than the racism\u201d at \u201cSNL.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite her grievances, Jones said she still played ball with the NBC program because she knew that was best for her career. <\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to be on the show,\u201d she said, \u201cand at the time I didn\u2019t think that was what was happening \u2018till it kept happening. And then every time I would get a sketch, I was like, \u2018Okay, who am I beating up this week?’\u201d<\/p>\nJones (seen above on \u201cSNL\u201d in 2015) said she even spoke to Lorne Michaels once about the racial \u201cundertones\u201d happening behind-the-scenes. \u201cIf you wanna be there, go there, because it is a great foundation,\u201d she said as advice to up-and-coming comedians. \u201cIt is a great place for you still to find yourself. You can definitely get love going there.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, Jones noted comics need to have \u201ca very strong personality\u201d and be \u201cvery secure in yourself\u201d if they want to be on the show. <\/p>\n
When asked to sum up her experience, Jones called it \u201cbittersweet\u201d because while she \u201cloved being there\u201d and had \u201cfun,\u201d she doesn\u2019t \u201cmiss the mental part\u201d of the job. <\/p>\nJones (seen above with Colin Jost during \u201cWeekend Update\u201d) noted the show is a \u201cmachine\u201d that has been successful since it premiered in 1975. At the time, Jones was the oldest new recruit in the show\u2019s history\u00a0at age 47. <\/p>\n
She earned two Emmy nominations for her performance before departing the series in 2019.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
