Blyth was just 16 when she gave a tour de \u200bforce performance in the film for which she is best remembered \u2014 \u201cMildred Pierce.\u201d The movie also gave temperamental <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/04\/24\/joan-crawford-made-boozy-oscars-history-in-bed-75-years-ago\/\">cinema legend Crawford<\/a> \u200bher only career Academy Award.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ann Blyth arrives at \u201cMary Poppins\u201d 40th anniversary at El Capitan Theater on November 30, 2004 in Los Angeles. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Blyth more than held her own on screen as Crawford\u2019s status-seeking, hateful and \u2060murderous daughter Veda, who competes with her mother for the same man, her stepfather, played by Zachary Scott. In one scene, Blyth \u200bslaps Crawford across the face, knocking her down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out before I kill you,\u201d an angry Crawford tells Blyth.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The movie was directed by \u200bMichael Curtiz, whose other films included the classics \u201cCasablanca,\u201d \u201cThe Adventures of Robin Hood\u201d and \u201cYankee Doodle Dandy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a great confidence in me, which in turn helped me,\u201d Blyth told the Los Angeles Times in 2013 of Curtiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe just blew everybody away,\u201d film historian Alan Rode told the Times, referring to Blyth. \u201cIt\u2019s certainly Joan \u200bCrawford\u2019s movie, but she is really the spine of the movie. She is the epitome of the film noir daughter from hell. \u200bIt\u2019s just an amazing performance that stands the test of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ann Blyth starred alongside Joan Crawford in \u201cMildred Pierce\u201d (1945). <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMildred Pierce\u201d was a hit with the public and critics, earning an Oscar nomination as \u200cbest picture. \u2060Crawford won the Oscar as best actress, while both Blyth and co-star Eve Arden were nominated as best supporting actress but did not win.<\/p>\n<p>Blyth\u2019s career momentum was stymied after \u201cMildred Pierce\u201d when she suffered a broken back in a toboggan accident.<\/p>\n<p>Her versatility enabled her to shine in musicals like \u201cKismet\u201d (1955) and \u201cThe Student Prince\u201d (1954), spectacles like \u201cThe Golden Horde\u201d (1951), comedies including \u201cMr. Peabody and the Mermaid\u201d (1948) co-starring William Powell, and dramas like \u201cOne Minute \u200bto Zero\u201d (1952) with Robert Mitchum.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ann Blyth made more than 30 movies during a film career lasting from 1944 to 1957. <span class=\"credit\">Kobal\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The petite, \u200bbrunette actress appeared alongside other \u2060top male stars including Burt Lancaster in \u201cBrute Force\u201d (1947), Mickey Rooney in \u201cKiller McCoy\u201d (1947), Bing Crosby in \u201cTop o\u2019 the Morning\u201d (1949), Mario Lanza in \u201cThe Great Caruso\u201d (1951), Gregory Peck in \u201cThe World in His Arms\u201d (1952) and Paul Newman in \u201cThe \u200bHelen Morgan Story\u201d (1957), her last movie.<\/p>\n<p>She had a lovely soprano voice and performed early in her \u200bcareer on the \u2060operatic stage.<\/p>\n<p>Blyth was a natural for film musicals, although for the songs in \u201cThe Helen Morgan Story\u201d the studio insisted on dubbing her vocals with another singer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ann Blyth in \u201cMr. Peabody and the Mermaid\u201d (1948). <span class=\"credit\">HA\/THA\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She occasionally appeared in TV roles after his last film including \u201cThe Twilight Zone\u201d in 1964 and ending with \u201cMurder, She Wrote\u201d in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>Ann \u2060Marie Blyth \u200bwas born on Aug. 16, 1928, in Mount Kisco, New York. <\/p>\n<p>She trained \u200bas a singer and actress as a child.
