{"id":7707,"date":"2026-07-03T11:00:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T11:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/new-doc-reveals-stan-lee-sold-his-marvel-rights-to-disney-for-a-paltry-6-million\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T11:00:04","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T11:00:04","slug":"new-doc-reveals-stan-lee-sold-his-marvel-rights-to-disney-for-a-paltry-6-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/login9ja.com\/global\/new-doc-reveals-stan-lee-sold-his-marvel-rights-to-disney-for-a-paltry-6-million\/","title":{"rendered":"New doc reveals Stan Lee sold his Marvel rights to Disney for a paltry $6 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F3%2F2026%2F07%2F133070928.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Stan Lee says he made just $6 million in a deal with Disney because he got bad legal advice \u2014 when he should have become \u201cindescribably rich\u201d in the deal.<\/p>\n<p>In an unreleased documentary \u201cStan Lee: The Final Chapter,\u201d the late Marvel writer opens up about the  paltry sum while admitting, \u201cNobody has made more bad business decisions than I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>The late Stan Lee revealed he sold his Marvel rights to Disney for $6 million.  <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Lee was responsible for creating characters like Spiderman and the Incredible Hulk.  <span class=\"credit\">Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lee was responsible for creating comic characters such as Spiderman, Black Panther and the Incredible Hulk, the core of the four stunningly successful \u201cAvengers\u201d movies, which have spawned more than a dozen spin-off.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>He said in the documentary that a lawyer convinced him to sell for an upfront lump sum rather than a share of profits.<\/p>\n<p>Lee says he realized too late \u201c[the lawyer] wanted me to take it now because he wanted his share, so I listened to [my lawyer] and I did what he said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he sold for $6 million. \u201cI think [the lawyer] took three, so there I was with $3 million,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not entirely clear what the terms of the deal were or what Lee was selling. He was an employee of Marvel, so he never owned rights to his comic book creations.<\/p>\n<p>The rights to Marvel\u2019s intellectual property have been bought and sold several times since, most recently when Disney acquired 100% of the rights in 2009 for $4 billion. <\/p>\n<p>It also purchased a stake in Lee\u2019s POW! Entertainment production company.<\/p>\n<p>He had sued Marvel over profits in movies based on his characters, but settled the claim in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Lee opened up about the deal about a month before his death. \u201cIf I had waited for this contract to come through, I would\u2019ve been part owner of Disney. I would\u2019ve been indescribably wealthy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Disney acquired Marvel Comics for $4 billion in 2009.  <span class=\"credit\">GC Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>The late comedy book mogul said he\u2019s always made bad business decisions.  <span class=\"credit\">Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Marvel universe is a multibillion dollar franchise for Disney. <\/p>\n<p>Lee passed away in 2018 at 95, and his controversial business dealings \u2013 including several legal disputes over his estate and elder abuse claims against his managers \u2013 followed his death. The doc \u201cgives a first-hand account of Lee\u2019s enduring positivity, amidst the power struggles, exploitation, and behind-the-scenes turmoil that surrounded the beloved creator during his final chapter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cWitnessing the treatment that Stan endured during those final years, especially at his age, really changes you,\u201d\u00a0the film\u2019s producer Jon Bolerjack said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>New doc \u201cStan Lee: The Final Chapter\u201d chronicles the last four years of his life.  <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Lee passed away in 2018 at 95.  <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe people around him believed they were untouchable, and I felt a responsibility to document what was happening. It took ten years to finish this film, but sharing the truth about those years is something I owed to Stan and to his fans,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>The doc will premiere at San Diego Comic-Con later this month.
