sentence was too lenient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Declan Winkless, 31, was originally handed an extra three years and four months in January after admitting prison smuggling and misconduct in a public office offences at Northampton Crown Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Court of Appeal has now increased that sentence to five years after a challenge brought on behalf of the Solicitor General.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Winkless, formerly of Kirkdale Road, South Wigston, is already serving an 11-year sentence for aggravated <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"burglaryLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/burglary\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">burglary<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Leicestershire LiveLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leicestermercury.co.uk\/news\/leicester-news\/leicester-prisoner-who-filmed-sex-11047447\" rel=\"follow\" prison officer Alicia Novas, 20, received an unchanged three year sentence after beginning an <a target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"iLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leicestermercury.co.uk\/news\/leicester-news\/leicester-prisoner-who-filmed-sex-11047447\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">i<\/a>nappropriate relationship with Winkless when she was 18 and had only recently started working in the prison service.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"image-group\"><button href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/hm-prison-service\" rel=\"follow\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\"> HMP Five Wells and HMP Peterborough, <\/a>as well as passing him confidential prison intelligence, including the identity of a prison informant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Detective Inspector Richard Cornell, from the East Midlands Regional Prisons Intelligence Unit, said: &#8220;These sentences reflect the gravity of the multitude of offences committed. Novas had only just begun her career as a prison officer, having taken up her position on July 1, 2024.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He added: &#8220;Unfortunately Novas used her position to form an inappropriate relationship with Winkless and to breach public trust and confidence further by illegally passing on information and smuggling drugs and mobile phones to him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Winkless undoubtedly encouraged this relationship and the unprofessional and illegal conduct carried out by Novas, and this is reflected in the charges he also faced and the sentence he has now received.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Officers say the offences took place between August 1, 2024, and March 21, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Novas was arrested on December 23, 2024, and was released on police bail while further investigations took place, with conditions not to contact Winkless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The investigation by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) subsequently established that by November 6, 2024, Winkless and Novas had been communicating via mobile phone, with evidence indicating contact had begun prior to this date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The telephone contact between the pair had been extensive, with more than 2,800 messages shared prior to Novas\u2019 arrest.
