\u201cIt\u2019s just too much house for me,\u201d Romans said, adding that he will move into another LA residence that he owns.\u00a0<\/p>\n
At\u00a03,103 square feet, the Catalina crib comes with four bedrooms and three baths \u2014 and sits on just .17 of an acre.\u00a0Original details include some of the light fixtures, arched French doors and windows, a sunken living room with a woodburning fireplace, wedding cake crown moldings, high ceilings and hardwood floors.\u00a0<\/p>\nBruce Marshall Romans. \u201cI\u2019m from Kentucky and went to architecture school for a time, and California has the best collection of these homes. But every one I went to had something wrong \u2014 the stairs had been torn out or the original floors and crown moldings had been stripped and the homes\u2019 original charm and design was gone \u2014 except for the Catalina house.\u201d<\/p>\n
When he walked in, he said: \u201cI was immediately blown away.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\nA dining area comes with a charming view. I was immediately taken by the layout, and I saw that the house had all the original details that are usually missing,\u201d Romans said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the fall of the stock market in 1929, developers stopped spending money on that kind of thing,\u201d Romans added.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable, and the home still has 3-inch white tiger oak floors, which is extremely rare.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition, Romans said, the butler\u2019s pantry still has \u201cold school swing doors,\u201d which allowed staff carrying trays of food to move easily from the kitchen to the formal dining room.\u00a0There\u2019s even a brass plate on the dining room floor that once held a button that the head of the household could step on when dining, so servants could know when to bring or take away courses.\u00a0<\/p>\nThe chef\u2019s kitchen, which is full of antique charm. \u201cIt\u2019s bigger than my first apartment. There is just detail after detail,\u201d Romans said of the bedroom, adding that the architect,\u00a0Clarence J. Smale,\u00a0designed homes for silent movie stars including Buster Keaton.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis guy was unbelievable, and the draftsperson was a woman, which was unheard of at the time,\u201d Romans said.\u00a0<\/p>\nA covered porch. The backyard also features a patio, a vine-covered\u00a0pergola and a grassy area.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels like something out of the south of France,\u201d said\u00a0listing broker is Naomi Selick of Douglas Elliman.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
