As Liverpool’s summer window edges closer, most of the noise has centered on the back line and the attacking flank area. Arne Slot is already set to welcome big‑money Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet through the door, a signing widely viewed as the first piece in a long‑term reshaping of the defence.

Large swathes of the fanbase have been just as vocal about the need for more explosiveness in wide areas, repeatedly calling for a pacey winger who can consistently beat their man 1v1 and stretch packed defenses in a way Liverpool have sometimes lacked this season.

The debate has rumbled on for weeks – center‑back or wide forward, control or chaos – but Jamie Carragher believes there is another area that quietly risks becoming the real “problem” position if it is not addressed in the upcoming window.

The former Liverpool defender believes the midfield area is starting to become a real concern for Arne Slot’s men and may need to be considered in the summer:

“The longer the game goes in every game, Mac Allister struggles and that’s a real problem for Liverpool, the center of midfield,” he said as quoted by Sky Sports.

“It’s something they have to address in the summer, or whether Szoboszlai goes back to the central midfield position.”

“When Jones comes on and the game goes end to end, I don’t know why he takes the Wirtz position.”

“He’s not that player anyway, just go 4-3-3 and have an extra body in front of the back four. There’s too much space.”

Dominik Szoboszlai is currently in preliminary talks with Liverpool over a new deal, but Alexis Mac Allister’s contract situation is a bit more nuanced.

His father, who also represents him as his agent, recently came out to confirm that no talks were underway with the Anfield club – coming amid constant Real Madrid speculation.

Perhaps Liverpool business in the summer will be a big indication of whether Mac Allister will stay past 2028.
