The Premier League has locked in a fifth Champions League place for the 2026/27 season, handing a huge boost to clubs chasing European football in the run‑in.

The BBC has confirmed that England will receive one of its coveted European Performance Spots, awarded to the two best‑performing leagues across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League this term.

Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 win away at Sporting CP in their Champions League quarter-final first leg is understood to have been the result that finally pushed the Premier League over the line in the coefficient race.

England now sit comfortably inside the top two of UEFA’s season ranking, well clear of Spain and Italy, ensuring that the team finishing fifth in the table will join the traditional top four in next year’s expanded 36‑team competition.

It is the second year in a row that England has earned an extra Champions League berth. Last season five Premier League sides qualified via their league position, with a sixth – Tottenham Hotspur – joining them as Europa League winners.

The same scenario could play out again, with Aston Villa and Liverpool both still capable of adding another Champions League place for the division if they win the Europa League or Champions League respectively while finishing outside the top five.

The immediate impact is on this season’s race for Europe.

Fifth place, currently occupied by Liverpool, now carries the same golden ticket that fourth used to, dragging a host of clubs into what has effectively become a top‑five battle rather than a top‑four. Just a handful of points separate Liverpool, Chelsea and several outsiders, meaning the final weeks of the campaign will be very important.

With the league phase format guaranteeing at least eight high‑profile European fixtures per club, the Premier League’s grip on the continental spotlight looks set to tighten even further in 2026/27.
