Adeleke urges IG to reinstate Amotekun amid rising insecurity in Osun

Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to lift the suspension on the operations of the Amotekun Corps, warning that continued inactivity of the outfit could worsen banditry and kidnapping in the state.

In a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said Osun’s security response had been weakened since Amotekun offices were sealed and some of its officers detained following a violent incident in Akinlalu community in 2025.

He argued that the corps had developed strong capacity for grassroots security, especially in rural and border areas, and its absence had created a vacuum now being exploited by criminals.

The governor also referenced a recent abduction in Ora-Igbomina, saying the development showed the urgency of restoring Amotekun’s operations.

“I am taking this matter to the public domain in view of another kidnapping at Ora-Igbomina. Closing down Amotekun exposes the Osun people to serious risks,” Adeleke said.

He urged the police to either charge detained operatives to court or release them, while insisting that reinstating the corps was critical to protecting rural communities.

Amotekun operations in Osun were suspended after allegations that some operatives were involved in killings during a 2025 incident in Akinlalu, leading to arrests and transfer of suspects to Abuja.
