The Testaments’ latest episode has left viewers curious to learn more about Garth’s family
The Testaments fans have been left curious about Garth’s parents after an easy-to-miss clue in episode 5.
The Handmaid’s Tale sequel show is well underway on Disney Plus, with fresh episodes dropping every Wednesday. It follows main character June Osborne’s (Elisabeth Moss) biological daughter Agnes (Chase Infiniti).
She is now grown up and attending Aunt Lydia’s (Ann Dowd) prep school for future wives. While the young woman has been raised believing in Gilead’s values, she is slowly seeing the brutal realities of how women are treated under the oppressive state.
But the teenager found a hint of hope in the latest episode, after learning that her crush Garth (Brad Alexander) is set to become a commander.
This means Agnes could have a chance at marrying for love, instead of being paired up with a much-older man.
The new instalment also gave viewers a clue about the identity of Garth’s father. In the closing moments of the episode, Garth is seen driving Agnes and her dad, Commander MacKenzie (Nate Corddry), home.
MacKenzie then congratulates Garth on his promotion, before adding: “We need men like yourself, and like your father. Willing to rise to the occasion.”
Who is Garth’s father?
It’s still unclear who Garth’s parents are. However, Alexander has revealed that his character’s dad was a “well-renowned Commander and a fighter of Gilead, up until the Boston moment”.
The actor told Variety that Garth’s father was injured in the events fans saw at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale. According to Alexander, Garth is “angry at the system that raised him”.
This doesn’t completely help viewers narrow down the guard’s lineage. However, it offers insight into Garth’s reasons for joining the Mayday resistance mission.

The forthcoming episode six will delve into Agnes’ dream to marry Garth.
A synopsis states: “As the Aunts sift through ancestry records to finalise matches, Agnes plots for her chance at love. Meanwhile, Lydia contemplates the choices that shaped her rise in Gilead.”
Meanwhile, fellow main character Daisy (Lucy Halliday) is still fighting for out of Gilead after entering the state as a Mayday spy.
